S>During the initial 6 month period of this project, attention was focused on several individual problem areas, primarily through literature searches ond interpretations of the data found. The first was a review of information on the effects of internal radiation doses to the lung with emphasis on the key question of the possible difference in response between a uniformly distributed dose and the same energy delivered to smaller -masses of tissue from radioactive particles. The second involved a study of the soil properties of importance to the transfer to man of radioactive particles and the factors involved in wind erosion with resulting air concentrations. The third was an attempt to better define the many questions arising from mechanisms of transfer involving localized concentrations of plutonium, either from direct disturbance of the soil or from transport of the contamination to other areas. Finally, calculations were made on the air concentrations expected from wind pickup of particles from one contaminated area for comporison with measurements in this area and to further refine the calculational model.
