Book Description
Illustrates Calculations Using Machine and Technological Processes The conjugate heat transfer (CHT) problem addresses the thermal interaction between a body and fluid flowing over or through it. This is an essential consideration in nature and different areas of engineering, including mechanics, aerospace, nuclear engineering, biology, and meteorology. Advanced conjugate modeling of the heat transfer process is now used extensively in a wide range of applications. Conjugate Problems in Convective Heat Transfer addresses the latest theory, methods, and applications associated with both analytical and numerical methods of solution CHT problems and their exact and approximate solutions. It demonstrates how the true value of a CHT solution is derived by applying these solutions to contemporary engineering design analysis. Assembling cutting-edge information on modern modeling from more than 200 publications, this book presents more than 100 example applications in thermal treatment materials, machinery operation, and technological processes. Creating a practical review of current CHT development, the author includes methods associated with estimating heat transfer, particularly that from arbitrary non-isothermal surfaces in both laminar and turbulent flows. Harnesses the Modeling Power of CHT Unique in its consistent compilation and application of current knowledge, this book presents advanced CHT analysis as a powerful tool for modeling various device operations and technological processes, from relatively simple procedures to complex multistage, nonlinear processes.

Book Description
Interest in studying the phenomena of convective heat and mass transfer between an ambient fluid and a body which is immersed in it stems both from fundamental considerations, such as the development of better insights into the nature of the underlying physical processes which take place, and from practical considerations, such as the fact that these idealised configurations serve as a launching pad formodelling the analogous transfer processes in more realistic physical systems. Such idealised geometries also provide a test ground for checking the validity of theoreticalanalyses. Consequently, an immense research effort has been expended in exploring and understanding the convective heat and mass transfer processes between a fluid and submerged objects of various shapes. Among several geometries which have received considerable attention are plates, circular and elliptical cylinders, and spheres, although much information is also available for some other bodies, such ascorrugated surfaces or bodies of relatively complicated shapes. The book is a unified progress report which captures the spirit of the work in progress in boundary-layer heat transfer research and also identifies potential difficulties and areas for further study. In addition, this work provides new material on convective heat and mass transfer, as well as a fresh look at basic methods in heat transfer. Extensive references are included in order to stimulate further studies of the problems considered. A state-of-the-art picture of boundary-layer heat transfer today is presented by listing and commenting also upon the most recent successful efforts and identifying the needs for further research.

Book Description
An original method of investigation of the conjugate conductive-convective problem of periodic heat transfer is developed. The novelty of the approach is that a particular conjugate problem is replaced by a general boundary-value problem for the heat conduction equation in the solid. Within the framework of the hyperbolic model of thermal conductivity, the effect of self-reinforcement of the degree of conjugation by increasing the period of oscillations is found. The processes of hydrodynamics and heat exchange with periodic internal structure are considered: periodic model of turbulent heat transfer, hydrodynamic instability, bubbles dynamics in liquid, and model of evaporating meniscus. The book is intended as a source and reference work for researchers and graduate students interested in the field of conjugate heat transfer.

Book Description
In this monograph Prof. Pramanick explicates the law of motive force, a fundamental law of nature that can be observed and appreciated as an addition to the existing laws of thermodynamics. This unmistakable and remarkable tendency of nature is equally applicable to all other branches of studies. He first conceptualized the law of motive force in 1989, when he was an undergraduate student. Here he reports various applications of the law in the area of thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and solid mechanics, and shows how it is possible to solve analytically century-old unsolved problems through its application. This book offers a comprehensive account of the law and its relation to other laws and principles, such as the generalized conservation principle, variational formulation, Fermat’s principle, Bejan’s constructal law, entropy generation minimization, Bejan’s method of intersecting asymptotes and equipartition principle. Furthermore, the author addresses some interrelated fundamental problems of contemporary interest, especially to thermodynamicists, by combining analytical methods, physical reasoning and the proposed law of motive force. This foundational work is a valuable reading for both students and researchers in exact as well as non-exact sciences and, at the same time, a pleasant learning experience for the novice.

Book Description
This volume contains an archival record of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Microfluidics Based Microsystems – Fundamentals and App- cations held in Çe ?me-Izmir, Turkey, August 23–September 4, 2009. ASIs are intended to be high-level teaching activity in scientific and technical areas of current concern. In this volume, the reader may find interesting chapters and various microsystems fundamentals and applications. As the world becomes increasingly concerned with terrorism, early - spot detection of terrorist’s weapons, particularly bio-weapons agents such as bacteria and viruses are extremely important. NATO Public Diplomacy division, Science for Peace and Security section support research, Advanced Study Institutes and workshops related to security. Keeping this policy of NATO in mind, we made such a proposal on Microsystems for security. We are very happy that leading experts agreed to come and lecture in this important NATO ASI. We will see many examples that will show us Microfluidics usefulness for rapid diagnostics following a bioterrorism attack. For the applications in national security and anti-terrorism, microfluidic system technology must meet the challenges. To develop microsystems for security and to provide a comprehensive state-of-the-art assessment of the existing research and applications by treating the subject in considerable depth through lectures from eminent professionals in the field, through discussions and panel sessions are very beneficial for young scientists in the field.

Book Description
Information technologies have changed people’s lives to a great extent, and now it is almost impossible to imagine any activity that does not depend on computers in some way. Since the invention of first computer systems, people have been trying to avail computers in order to solve complex problems in various areas. Traditional methods of calculation have been replaced by computer programs that have the ability to predict the behavior of structures under different loading conditions. There are eight chapters in this book that deal with: optimal control of thermal pollution emitted by power plants, finite difference solution of conjugate heat transfer in double pipe with trapezoidal fins, photovoltaic system integrated into the buildings, possibilities of modeling Petri nets and their extensions, etc.

Book Description
Applications of mathematical heat transfer and fluid flow models in engineering and medicine Abram S. Dorfman, University of Michigan, USA Engineering and medical applications of cutting-edge heat and flow models This book presents innovative efficient methods in fluid flow and heat transfer developed and widely used over the last fifty years. The analysis is focused on mathematical models which are an essential part of any research effort as they demonstrate the validity of the results obtained. The universality of mathematics allows consideration of engineering and biological problems from one point of view using similar models. In this book, the current situation of applications of modern mathematical models is outlined in three parts. Part I offers in depth coverage of the applications of contemporary conjugate heat transfer models in various industrial and technological processes, from aerospace and nuclear reactors to drying and food processing. In Part II the theory and application of two recently developed models in fluid flow are considered: the similar conjugate model for simulation of biological systems, including flows in human organs, and applications of the latest developments in turbulence simulation by direct solution of Navier-Stokes equations, including flows around aircraft. Part III proposes fundamentals of laminar and turbulent flows and applied mathematics methods. The discussion is complimented by 365 examples selected from a list of 448 cited papers, 239 exercises and 136 commentaries. Key features: Peristaltic flows in normal and pathologic human organs. Modeling flows around aircraft at high Reynolds numbers. Special mathematical exercises allow the reader to complete expressions derivation following directions from the text. Procedure for preliminary choice between conjugate and common simple methods for particular problem solutions. Criterions of conjugation, definition of semi-conjugate solutions. This book is an ideal reference for graduate and post-graduate students and engineers.
