Book Description
The measurements of dimuon production (M> GeV/c2) by 125 GeV/c anti p and .pi.− performed by Fermilab Experiment 537 are compared to the predictions of the Drell-Yan model in this report. We find that the naive Drell-Yan cross sections calculated using CDHS and NA3 structure functions are too low by factors of 2.25 +- 0.45 and 2.50 +- 0.50 to reproduce the levels of our anti p and .pi.− cross sections respectively. The shapes of the dsigma/dx/sub F/ and M3 dsigma/dM differential cross sections are well reproduced by the naive zeroth order formula. The shape of the dsigma/dp/sub T/ cross section for the dimuons as measured by E-537 can be fit using the Alterelli, Parisi, and Petronzio O(.cap alpha./sub s/) prescription for calculating P/sub T/ distributions but requires k/sub T/2 of the interacting constituents of the nucleons and pion of 0.88 (GeV/c)2. This k/sub T/2 is larger than the k/sub T/2/sub .pi./ = 0.59 +- 0.05 (GeV/c)2 and k/sub T/2/sub P/ = 0.52 +- 0.05 (GeV/c)2 obtained from the linear extrapolations of the s variation of the of the experimentally observed dsigma/dp/sub T/ distributions to s-O. This implies that first order QCD in the formalism of Altarelli, Parisi, and Petronzio is insufficient to explain of the data.

Scalar Boson Decays to Tau Leptons
Author: Cécile Caillol
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319706500
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 282
Book Description
This thesis presents a study of the scalar sector in the standard model (SM), as well as various searches for an extended scalar sector in theories beyond the SM (BSM). The first part of the thesis details the search for an SM Higgs boson decaying to taus, and produced by gluon fusion, vector boson fusion, or associated production with a vector boson, leading to evidence for decays of the Higgs boson to taus. In turn, the second part highlights several searches for an extended scalar sector, with scalar boson decays to taus. In all of the analyses presented, at least one scalar boson decays to a pair of taus. The results draw on data collected by the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) detector during proton–proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 7 or 8 TeV.
