Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 9 The majority of the rolls printed in this volume and of those which will appear in the succeeding volume are from these Adams Papers in the State Library. In addition there are rolls from the series lettered War, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, among the bound volumes of archives in the State Library, a number from the archives of the Connecticut Historical Society, a few from private sources, and several from the New York Historical Society's Collections for 1891. Items have also been gleaned from a volume of army accounts 1755 - 1758 in the Comptroller's Office, from the printed series of the Records-of the Colony of Connecticut, and from the file of the Connecticut Gazette in the Yale University Library. The greater part of the copy for this volume was prepared by the editor, and the proof of every roll has been read by him with the original manuscript. The index cards, which were written by Miss Alice M. Gay of Hartford, were also all compared by him with the printed sheets before they were printed. The names and official positions of general, regimental, and company officers, gathered from scattered sources, have been ar ranged for convenience at the beginning of each campaign, regi ment, and company. So far as could be ascertained, the residence of each officer is given. Where the residence does not appear in the records but has been added by the editor, it is enclosed in brackets. In a number of instances where there were two or more rolls of the same company covering the same period, only one has been printed in full and a reference made to the others. This work does not profess to be more than a list of men who served as soldiers, with an account of their service and such further records as will aid in identifying them. Consequently much has been omitted in the printing of these rolls which has appeared irrelevant to the object in view. It has seemed outside the scope of the work to give the amount of bounty received, the sum per month or the total amount of pay received, the number of months and days in service when dates of both enlistment and discharge are given, and numerous similar items. As the location of the manuscript of each roll is given, the curious can find such items as occur by reference to the originals. Book Description
Excerpt from Collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, Vol. 24 George E. Hoadley in his early life followed mercantile pursuits. His later years were devoted to the home and to historical and antiquarian studies. He became a member of the Connecticut Historical Society on February 5, 1901, and later was elected a member for life. He had an exceeding fondness for the numerous and varied literary and antiquarian treasures that had been gathered by both his brother Charles and himself, and took great pleasure in exhibiting and explain ing these to his friends in the new home which he erected in his later life in West Hartford near the Hartford boundary line. There he passed away quietly surrounded by his treasures on November 21, 1922, in his eighty-sixth year. Neither of the brothers married. By the will Of Mr. George E. Hoadley, and by a further memorandum accompanying it, many Of his manuscript treasures became the property of the Connecticut Historical Society, thus adding to some which he had presented to the Society during his life. His will also made the Society the legatee of one-half of the residuary estate remaining after a number Of personal bequests. This considerable residuary legacy, together with a gift made during his life time, were for the specific purpose Of procuring a site if necessary and of erecting a fire proof building for the use and occupancy of this Society. These funds were invested in high-class securi ties when they were received, and with the addition of their increment and the rise in the values of stocks they increased rapidly. However, before the Society had arranged for the erection Of a building there came the sudden and violent drop in the values of securities, which has postponed for the present the erection Of the contemplated building, although the site for it has been secured.
