Author: Fred J. Ellermeier
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 158
Book Description
This book reviews the causes and effects of power outages and establishes treatment system plans that are reliable and resistant to vulnerabilities, in order that water and wastewater utilities can properly respond to these events. Financial and public health risks are addressed to assist facility planners and operators when considering the multi-faceted issues that pertain to standby power options. By providing a basis for the planning that ensures safety and reliability, the book is intended to provide education on the need, costs, and options related to standby power supply.

Urban Stormwater Management in the United States
Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309125391
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 611
Book Description
The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Sustainable Communities
Author: Sim Van der Ryn
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781897408179
Category : Architecture and society
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
This classic text is a practical vision of how different types of communities can make the transition to a sustainable way of life that balances production and consumption, reduces resource waste and produces long-term social and ecological health. Our old patterns of growth are built on isolation-an isolation from the environment, an isolation between activities and ultimately an isolation between individuals. Whether city or suburb, these qualities of isolation are the same. Buildings ignore climate and place, uses are zoned into separate areas, and individuals are isolated by a lack of convivial public places. Sustainable patterns break down the separations; buildings respond to the climate rather than overpowering it, mixed uses draw activities and people together, and shared spaces reestablish community. -from Sustainable Communities
