Author: Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135577803
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 232
Book Description
This work offers an edition and translation of some 30 poems by the trobairitz, a remarkable group of women poets from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, who composed in the style and language of the troubadours. Introductory essays and notes by specialists in the field place the poems in literary, linguistic, historical, social and cultural contexts. English versions facing Occitan texts elucidate the original language and themes, while supplying poems that can be enjoyed by contemporary readers . The varied corpus includes love songs (cansos), debate poems (tensos), political satires (sirventes) and other lyrical sub-genres (including dawn-song, lament, ballad, chanson de mal mariee). To represent the range of female voices available in the lyric corpus of the troubadours, the editors have selected songs consistently attributed to historically documented women poets, as well as songs whose authorship is open to question. The latter may be presented by the manuscripts with or without a named woman poet, but all offer female speakers personae characteristic of troubadour poets in general.

Razos and Troubadour Songs
Author: James J. Wilhelm
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429603096
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 292
Book Description
Originally published in 1990, this book contains the full text and translation of razos and troubadour songs. The coupling of the razos and songs in this edition is based on the conviction that though the lyrics should first be read on their own, it is highly instructive to read the two together, as the razo authors intended. This allows the reader to attempt to read as a thirteenth-century contemporary might have.

Author: Jan Marsh
Publisher: Faber & Faber
ISBN: 0571297846
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 568
Book Description
'Jan Marsh's book is the best researched and fullest biography of Rossetti we have yet had.' Fiona MacCarthy, New York Review of Books'Although never formally part of the Pre-Raphaelite poetic school, which included her brother Gabriel, William Morris, and Algernon Swinburne, Christina Rossetti has always been linked to it. [Jan Marsh] gives full attention to both the individual and her unique variety of fantastic and devotional poetry... Marsh delineates an appealing person while examining her adolescent nervous breakdown, abortive engagement to a lapsed Catholic painter, frustrated love for an absentminded scholar, and relationships with her devout but hearty sister, Maria, and with her brothers... The author's steady, sympathetic course through Rossetti's divided life enables readers to delve into the intense and original self most fully expressed in her poetry.' Kirkus Review
