Book Description
Excerpt from Chadbourn Thoroughfare Plan, 1980 Transportation planning for the Ahoskie area dates back to 1958, when the Town of Ahoskie requested the North Carolina State Highway Commission to develop a plan for future road and street needs in the area. Studies conducted in the early l96o's led to the development of a Preliminary Thorough fare Plan for the Ahoskie area in 1964. This plan was subsequently adopted by the Town of Ahoskie on November 17, 1964, and by the North Carolina State Highway Commission on February 4, 1965. On April 5, 1965, the Town of Ahoskie and the North Carolina State Highway Commission entered into an agreement to develop existing and future travel demand patterns and analyze the 1964 thoroughfare plan based on this data. This study's recommendations were incorporated in a revised thoroughfare plan (map dated December 1, and the Ahoskie Thoroughfare Plan report, February, 1969. In December, 1983, the Ahoskie Town Council requested an update of the 1967 plan. Due to the construction of the NC 11 Bypass, the possible construction of a new Middle School on NC 561 west of Town, and the age of the existing plan it was felt that a plan update would be desirable. In 1984, a comprehensive street system inventory, detailed housing and employment inventories, and area-wide traffic count data was collected. This information was used to develop a set of travel forecast models. This report details the modelling process and plan development procedure used in updating the Ahoskie Area Thoroughfare Plan. Book Description
Excerpt from Thoroughfare Plan for Lenoir County Following several meetings with the Lenoir County Planning Board, the Lenoir County Transportation Committee, and the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners (refer to Appendix C), a public hearing was held on February 2, 1998. No comments were received from the public. Following the public hearing, the Lenoir County Board of Commissioners unanimously adopted the Lenoir County Thoroughfare Plan dated November 3, 1997. The North Carolina Board of Transportation followed with adoption ofthe plan on June 5, 1998. Initiative for plan implementation will rest largely with the policy boards and citizens of the area. Highway needs throughout the State exceed available funding. Therefore, local areas should aggressively pursue funding for desired projects. It should be emphasized that the recommended plan is based on anticipated growth and development of the planning area as indicated by current trends and land use. Prior to construction of specific projects, a more detailed study will be required to reconsider development trends and to determine specific design requirements. Book Description
Excerpt from Thoroughfare Plan for the City of Lumberton In January of 1989, a formal agreement was made between the City of Lumberton and the Statewide Planning Branch of the North Carolina Department of Transportation to begin an update of the 1978 Lumberton Thoroughfare Plan. The resulting Lumberton Thoroughfare Plan (refer to Figure 3, page 13) was developed using the thoroughfare planning principles described in Chapter IV of this report. The study is based on the traditional four step planning process: trip generation; trip distribution; mode choice; and trip assignment. The study involved two repetitions of this process. First, socioeconomic data, traffic count data, and geometric street data collected in 1989 were used to simulate the area's 1989 traffic patterns. When the traffic model accurately reproduced the traffic counts, the socioeconomic data and the external station volumes were projected to the design year (2010) and applied to the same four step process to forecast future traffic patterns. The future traffic patterns were then compared to existing capacities and possible solutions were tested. This report documents the findings of the study and the resulting recommendations (refer to Figure 4, page It includes recommendations for thoroughfare cross-sections, cost estimates and benefit evaluations for the recommended improvements, and recommendations for plan implementation. Following several informational meetings with the Planning Director and the City Council, a public hearing was held on November 13, 1995. The Lumberton Thoroughfare Plan was unanimously adopted following the hearing. Initiative for plan implementation will rest largely with the policy boards and citizens of the area. Book Description
Excerpt from Harnett County Thoroughfare Plan: March, 1995 The objective of thoroughfare planning is to enable the transportation network to be progressively developed to adequately meet the transportation needs of a community or region as land develops and traffic volumes increase. By not planning now for our future transportation needs, unnecessary costs to the physical, social, and economic environment may very well be incurred. Thoroughfare planning is a tool that can be used by local officials to plan for future transportation needs, while at the same time reducing the costs to our environment. The primary purpose of this report is to present the findings and recommendations of the thoroughfare plan study conducted for Hamett County. The secondary purpose of this report is to document the basic thoroughfare planning principles and procedures used in developing these recommendations. This report can be divided into three parts. The first part of the report, covered in Chapter 1, covers the highlights of the study. Chapters 2 and 3 provide a detailed description of the Thoroughfare Plan study recommendations and address different methods by which these recommendations can be implemented. The final chapter, Chapter 4, covers study procedure and findings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
John Cage's disdain for records was legendary. He repeatedly spoke of the ways in which recorded music was antithetical to his work. In Records Ruin the Landscape, David Grubbs argues that, following Cage, new genres in experimental and avant-garde music in the 1960s were particularly ill suited to be represented in the form of a recording. These activities include indeterminate music, long-duration minimalism, text scores, happenings, live electronic music, free jazz, and free improvisation. How could these proudly evanescent performance practices have been adequately represented on an LP? In their day, few of these works circulated in recorded form. By contrast, contemporary listeners can encounter this music not only through a flood of LP and CD releases of archival recordings but also in even greater volume through Internet file sharing and online resources. Present-day listeners are coming to know that era's experimental music through the recorded artifacts of composers and musicians who largely disavowed recordings. In Records Ruin the Landscape, Grubbs surveys a musical landscape marked by altered listening practices.
