Potatoes infected with potato wart (Synchytrium endobioticum) were discovered in a single field in Prince Edward Island in October 2000, leading to the closure of the United States border to potato shipments from the province. This closure had a devastating impact on the province's potato industry and also in other sectors of the provincial economy. This report presents the Standing Committee's investigation of the events leading up to & subsequent to the discovery of the potato wart fungus. It also reviews the legal challenge to the Committee's subpoena to compel attendance by representatives from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
