Cada persona puede encontrar en su propia historia experiencias de desastres y, aunque estos puedan parecer inevitables, no lo son. Es posible emplear estrategias de preparación y mitigación para disminuir el impacto de eventos naturales y antrópicos en las personas y en su entorno. Por eso, podemos decir que los desastres son socionaturales, pues su ocurrencia es un proceso complejo que depende, en gran medida, de las decisiones que tomamos como colectivos e individuos, y que producen impactos diferenciados en quienes habitan los territorios. Ciencia con impacto se presenta como un compendio de documentos que surgieron en el marco de la serie Policy Papers del Centro de Investigación para la Gestión Integrada del Riesgo de Desastres (CIGIDEN), y tiene por objeto relevar la capacidad de incidencia de la investigación científica en la política pública. La misión de esta serie ha sido recoger, en textos cortos y direccionados, la investigación que realiza este centro hace más de diez años en torno a la gestión del riesgo de desastres, para vincularla estratégicamente hacia las y los tomadores de decisiones. Este libro presenta trece escritos construidos a partir de experiencias participativas, inter y multidisciplinarias. En ellos observamos aportes concretos a la política pública, generados en el marco de un centro científico que incorpora diversos saberes, tiene incidencia en la sociedad civil, ha acogido la necesidad de la perspectiva de género, y además trabaja en conjunto con comunidades que tienen formas a veces muy distintas de aproximarse a la comprensión y a la gestión del riesgo de desastres. “Este libro nos invita, a quienes legislamos, a reconocer los desafíos, pero, sobre todo, a avanzar en propuestas antes de que sea demasiado tarde”. The subducting Nazca plate beneath the Andes caused this major earthquake, generating strong shaking, permanent deformation, free oscillations of the Earth, and tsunamis.
