Book Description
This book shows how Carnival under British colonial rule became a locus of resistance as well as an exercise and affirmation of power. Carnival is both a space of theatricality and a site of politics, where the playful, participatory aspects are appropriated by countervailing forces seeking to influence, control, channel or redirect power. Focusing specifically on the Maltese islands, a tiny European archipelago situated at the heart of the Mediterranean, this work links the contrast between play and power to other Carnival realities across the world. It examines the question of power and identity in relation to different social classes and environments of Carnival play, from streets to ballrooms. It looks at satire and censorship, unbridled gaiety and controlled celebration. It describes the ways Carnival was appropriated as a power channel both by the British and their Maltese subjects, and ultimately how it was manipulated in the struggle for Malta’s independence.

Book Description
Cultures around the world have recently become more isolated and aggressive in defending their socio-cultural domain. However, throughout history, many civilizations have established extensive and long-term cultural ties with diverse cultural groups. Despite ideological schisms that emerged between civilizations from time to time, our hunger for cultural encounters and coexistence shines through. Cultural Encounters and Tolerance Through Analyses of Social and Artistic Evidences: From History to the Present sheds light on different histories and presents evidence of cultural encounters, coexistence, and acculturation. This publication presents cultural assets as more mobile than ideologies across boundaries as it can be more often seen in the cultural arena. Covering topics such as the effects of colonialism, geometrical forms, and architectural heritage, it serves as an essential resource for architects, art historians, cultural historians, students and professors of higher education, sociologists, anthropologists, researchers, and academicians.

Book Description
Selected papers from the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Conference on Civil Rights and Race Relations, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, October, 1993, emphasize the historical origins of the civil rights movement in the US. Other discussions comment on reactions and representations of the movement during the 60's and today, including comparative analyses of US and United Kingdom race relations, and a particularly interesting study of the similarities between the South African Defiance Campaigns of the 1950s and the non-violent US civil rights campaigns.
