Book Description
This book represents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the most up-to-date approaches to cancer management. Each chapter, prepared by leading basic researchers and clinicians, provides an in depth description of a specific method for cancer management. The chemotherapy section of the book is updated to include the newest drugs as well as those currently in development. Organized by drug class, this section provides the latest information on most drugs, including their mechanisms of action, interactions with other agents, toxicities, side effects, and mechanisms of resistance. The biological therapy section of the book provides expanded coverage of the currently used cytokines, vaccines, and cell based therapies of cancer. Full consideration is also given to other modern treatment approaches, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors, inhibitors of tumor angiogenesis, and the transcatheter management of cancer. Current advances in hyperthermia in cancer treatment, hematologic and nutritional support, bone marrow transplantation, pain management and care of the terminally ill patients with cancer are also presented. In summary, this book provides a comprehensive coverage of the current knowledge on the most innovative, systematic and multidisciplinary approaches to the treatment of patients with cancer.

Book Description
Although much progress has been made in the four years since the first edition of Management of Prostate Cancer, prostate cancer remains a significant biological, me- cal, and personal challenge for millions of men. In this interval, some important trends and observations have emerged that represent real progress in the field and which will shape the direction of clinical practice and research in the next 5–10 years. These obs- vations include: (1) a decline in prostate-related cancer mortality in the United States, likely owing to a combination of factors including screening, more aggressive and earlier therapy, and improvements in specific therapies; (2) a significant downward pathological stage migration, so that an individual’s chance of cure for a given stage, grade, and PSA is better now than it was early in the PSA era, even without associated improvements in individual therapies; (3) the recognition of new PSA isoforms that may refine screening strategies; (4) several randomized, phase III clinical trials demonstrating survival adv- tages of one form of therapy over another in selected populations (external beam rad- therapy with adjuvant hormones vs radiotherapy alone, radical prostatectomy vs observation); (5) a focus on the biology of bone and bone metastasis, and new agents that reduce skeletal-related events and which may inhibit the growth of new metastases; (6) second-generation anti-PSMA antibodies with improved potential for imaging and therapy; (7) the development and widespread adoption of nomograms that assist in cli- cal decision-making for individual patients; (8) the identification of new genes that

Book Description
In 1902, the scientist John Beard, at the time Professor at the University of Edinburgh, proposed that the pancreatic enzyme trypsin represents the body'¿¿s primary defense against cancer and would be useful as a cancer treatment. Despite his documentation and reputation '¿¿ he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in 1906 for his work in embryology '¿¿ most cancer experts rejected Beard'¿¿s thesis outright. However, not everyone dismissed Beard. A number of physicians employed pancreatic enzymes in the treatment of patients diagnosed with advanced cancer, often with remarkable results as reported in the scientific literature. These successes provoked a heated debate about the therapy in the first decade of the 20th century. In 1911 Beard published The Enzyme Treatment of Cancer and Its Scientific Basis, outlining his hypothesis, and the compelling results. Though published to some very positive reviews, the book was soon forgotten as the scientific community enthusiastically latched on to Madame Curie'¿¿s claim that radiation represented a simple non-toxic cure for cancer. It would be years before scientists realized radiation cured few cancers and was quite toxic '¿¿ Madame Curie herself died as a result of her exposure to uranium. Though Beard died in relative obscurity in 1924, contemporary evidence from molecular biology confirms many of his precepts. In 2010, nearly 100 years since publication of this book, it is time Beard'¿¿s work be reread. With billions of dollars spent in recent decades on cancer research with only slight success, Beard'¿¿s thesis warrants a thorough reconsideration.

Book Description
Although prostate cancer is a disease that strikes nearly 200,000 men every year, it is a disease that has been shrouded in silence, in part because it strikes at the very core of masculine identity. But in Man to Man, bestselling author Michael Korda breaks that silence, turning the story of his illness and recovery into a candid and instructive book that speaks not only to every man and woman whose life has been touched by prostate cancer but to everyone who lives in fear of it. With unsparing frankness, Korda describes how he survived the ordeal of prostate surgery and its painful and humiliating aftereffects. He tells us how tumors are graded, evaluates different treatments, and makes sense of prostate cancer's mystifying "numbers." Practical, immensely readable, filled with information, and, above all, hopeful, Man to Man is literally a life-saver.
