For the purposes of this report, traffic calming involves changes in street alignment, installation of barriers, and other physical measures to reduce traffic speeds and cut-through volumes in the interest of street safety, livability, and other public purposes. Book Description
Speeding and speed control are often considered critical issues on residential and collector streets. Activities to reduce speed and volume on residential streets have recently been gathered under the term traffic calming. Speed management goes a step beyond traffic calming by looking at higher speed facilities such as arterials in addition to residential and collector streets. Integrating speed management techniques on residential, collector, and arterial streets can encourage traffic to use major roadways rather than residential streets and can address need on an areawide basis rather than for an isolated roadway or intersection. This Handbook provides practitioners with basic information regarding speed management techniques including descriptions, photographs, experiences of agencies that have used the techniques, and lessons that have been learned.

Book Description
In 1919, the Town Planning Institute of Canada (TPIC) brought together the founders of a new discipline committed to improving cities and those who live in them. TPIC's Journal, and its successor, Plan Canada, provide a wealth of knowledge about Canadian planning. These journals have served as the voice for Canadian urban planning theory, history, and practice; Plan Canada, as the journal of record of Canadian planning research and practice, continues to inform international discourse about the profession.A Reader in Canadian Planning: Linking Theory and Practice is a selection of some of the most important and provocative articles from Plan Canada from the last 30 years.Articles included in the Reader highlight the accomplishments and contribution of Canadian planning theory and practice. It is suitable as a text for courses in Canadian community planning theory and practice, and for those preparing for the Canadian Institute of Planner's entrance examination. Jill Grant's introduction and commentaries develop a theoretical and historical framework to set a context for the papers and the issues they raise.
