Excerpt from Calendar of the Papers of Franklin Pierce: Prepared From the Original Manuscripts in the Library of Congress The papers herein calendared were obtained from the Hon. Kirk D. Pierce, of Hillsboro, New Hampshire, in 1905. They are that portion of the papers of President Franklin Pierce that survived destruction by fire many years ago and, with the exception of scattered docu ments in other hands, form the only collection of Franklin Pierce papers now in existence. While few in number they are rich in politi cal information and contain much of historical value especially con cerning the inside workings of the Democratic Party in New Hamp shire and other States. The tension of the period preceding the Civil War and the efforts of the peace advocates are shown in the correspondence; but the greatest value of the papers is biographical. The picture they present of Franklin Pierce the man is a picture worthy of place in the gallery of our Presidents. The preliminary work and general carding of these papers was done by Mr. Wilmer Ross Leech, now in the Manuscript Department of the New York Public Library; the Calendar was completed, revised, edited, and indexed by Mr. John C.
