Book Description
Excerpt from Business Methods and the War Class conducted in this School during the past seven years shows, no doubt, that military men can improve their efficiency by a study of civilian methods, and the wonderful success with which Transport and Supply have been managed during the present War shows this to be the case. It occurs to me, however, that quite possibly civilians might, with equal advantage, make some study of the soldier's methods of handling business, and, accordingly, in this short course of lectures which I have undertaken, I propose to start by making some comparison of military and civilian methods of business organisation, with a view to seeing whether this new point of view may not suggest some ideas that are well worth following up in the interests of business efficiency. The American people and Congress sought advice and counsel from recognized leaders of thought and industry. J. Ogden Armour was among those whose Opinions and beliefs were most eagerly sought after during the period of discussion of war measures. He responded by discussing the business problems of the war in signed articles in various of the nation's leading magazines and in the public press The authority with which he spoke compelled attention and his views were found to be sound. With prophetic vision, he advocated many Of the remedial measures afterwards adopted by the govern ment to meet war problems. His ideas were reflected in the government's efforts to encourage production, to improve distribution, to foster cold storages, to prevent waste in the home, and in the guaranteeing of prices for staple commodities, the licensing of big food purveyors and organization of the retailers for the purpose of reducing prices. The demand for Mr. Armour's writings on the Business Problems of the War has been so large that his principal articles have been gathered together in this book. The editor. Book Description
Excerpt from The Business of War In the glamour Of battle heroism the world loses sight Of the mechanics of war. It is more thrilling to have an emotion about a forlorn trench hope led to victory than to hear about a supply column that reached the front under a storm of shells. Yet the courage of the teamsters who face death with only the reins in their hands is fit to rank with the valour of the fighting men armed with guns. War has become a business. It is the world's supreme task at this moment. Business as usual has gone into the scrap heap along with many other illusions that clogged effort and begot a costly Optimism in the early days of the conflict. The one definite work of civilization is to win the war. The path to victory is through organization. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Getting the Most Out of Business: Observations of the Application of the Scientific Method to Business Practice I confess I had little thought of writing a book when the articles* from which this book has grown, first took shape. My business life has been cast in a twentieth century mold. As an editor, advertising man, a sales manager and business executive, I have always been most interested in the relation of business to the masses. AS a manager of men, whether through direct daily contact, or on the plat form, or through the printed word, or in voluntary associa tions, I have found certain fundamental principles which, when skilfully applied, invariably brought the desired result. These principles are not easily formulated, nor are they easy Of application in the face Of wrong practice so Old as to have become petrified in a sacred tradition.
