Focusing on Romania from 1945 to 2016, Socialist Heritage explores the socialist state's attempt to create its own heritage, as well as the legacy of that project. Contrary to arguments that the socialist regimes of Central and Eastern Europe aimed to erase the pre-war history of the socialist cities, Emanuela Grama shows that the communist state in Romania sought to exploit the past for its own benefit. The book traces the transformation of a central district of Bucharest, the Old Town, from a socially and ethnically diverse place in the early 20th century, into an epitome of national history under socialism, and then, starting in the 2000s, into the historic center of a European capital. Under socialism, politicians and professionals used the district's historic buildings, especially the ruins of a medieval palace discovered in the 1950s, to emphasize the city's Romanian past and erase its ethnically diverse history. Since the collapse of socialism, the cultural and economic value of the Old Town has become highly contested. Bucharest's middle class has regarded the district as a site of tempting transgressions. Its poor residents have decried their semi-decrepit homes, while entrepreneurs and politicians have viewed it as a source of easy money. Such arguments point to recent negotiations about the meanings of class, political participation, and ethnic and economic belonging in today's Romania. Grama's rich historical and ethnographic research reveals the fundamentally dual nature of heritage: every search for an idealized past relies on strategies of differentiation that can lead to further marginalization and exclusion.

This book examines the progression of real estate development within the deindustrialization-financialization nexus. It explores the roles it has in semi-peripheral contexts such as Romania, where it overlaps with the process of the transformation of state socialism into neoliberal capitalism, viewed at the intersection of global, national, and local forces. The book focuses on real estate development in Romania as a product and a driver of capitalism. It contributes to ongoing debates in critical urban theories and Marxist perspectives in urban sociology. Focusing on the under-researched East European region, it decenters social research and fine-tunes the political economy theory about state and economic restructuring. The book contains methodological and theoretical insights that are useful in other contexts beyond Romania and Central and Eastern Europe, especially in other (semi)peripheral emerging markets. The focus of critical inquiry into capitalist transformations adopted in this book can also support political activism. It uncovers the varieties of the deindustrialization-financialization nexus in real estate built on the dismantled pre-1990 socialist industrial plants. The nowadays society is confronted with some of the most pronounced disparities in the economic system, with direct repercussions on the labor market, borne by both employees and employers. The main deficiencies of the labor market are caused by the low growth rate of the demand for goods, with consequences in terms of employment, the effect of decreasing the purchasing power of the population, the lack of correlation between the growth rates of labor productivity and the price of labor, and also to an insufficient training of a practical nature of the workforce. Labor market is therefore a manifestation of the need to work for both the production act, from the perspective of the firms' sector, and the consumer act, from the perspective of the household's sector, each of the two sectors having different determinations for the same objective: gaining profit from valuing the work. Therefore, work is analyzed in the terms of profitability: cost for the producer, income for the worker, benefit for the society, in the conditions in which from valuing the work production factor and the human capital it can be created the object of the economic goods' market. In the current economic and social-political development context, on the labor market there is an intensification of a series of manifestations that have as substance educational and cultural heterogeneity, the institutional dissolution or the dissolution of authorities in what regards the establishment of some normative elements that would favor work and entrepreneurship, by means of economic strings, mainly fiscal ones, the lack of complementarity between educational policies and occupational ones. How do housing estates contribute to the urban mosaic of neighborhoods by ethnic and socio-economic status? Nicola Pasic and Ante Trumbic: The book will provide the first parallel biographies of two key Yugoslav politicians of the early 20th century: Nikola Pasic, a Serb, and Ante Trumbic, a Croat. It will also offer a brief history of the creation of Yugoslavia (initially known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes), internationally accepted at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919-20 (at the Treaty of Versailles). Such an approach will fill two major gaps in the literature - scholarly biographies of Pasic and Trumbic are lacking, while Yugoslavia's formation is due a reassessment - and to introduce the reader to the central question of South Slav politics: Serb-Croat relations.
