The Concept of Treaty in International Law
Author: Jan Klabbers
Publisher: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers
ISBN: 9789041102447
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 332
Book Description
Whether or not a certain norm is legally binding upon international actors may often depend on whether or not the instrument which contains the norm is to be regarded as a treaty. In this study, the author argues that instruments which contain commitments are, "ex" "hypothesi," treaties. In doing so, he challenges popular notions proclaiming the existence of morally and politically binding agreements and so-called soft law'. Such notions, Klabbers argues, are internally inconsistent and founded upon untenable presumptions. Moreover, they find little support in the pertinent decisions of municipal and international courts and tribunals. The book addresses issues of importance not only for academics working in international law, constitutional law and political science, but also for practitioners involved in the making, implementation and enforcement of international agreements.

Cinematic Rotterdam
Author: Floris Paalman
Publisher: Nai010 Publishers
ISBN: 9789064507663
Category : Architecture
Languages : en
Pages : 0
Book Description
"This publication zooms in on the part cinema has played in urban development between 1920 and 1980. Rotterdam acts as an inspiring example, as observed from an international perspective. This city has its very own history in film. Besides providing the backdrop for a variety of feature films and avant-garde classics, Cinematic Rotterdam describes how the city has established and maintained its identity through thousands of promotional and educational films and television programmes. This diverse collection of filmed material presents an audiovisual map of Rotterdams emergence as a modern city. Written by film scholar Floris Paalman, Cinematic Rotterdam is not only a thorough study of the audiovisual history of Rotterdam but is more especially a conceptual exploration of a hidden dimension of the city itself. Besides being an exhaustive reference work for policymakers, clients, producers and researchers in architecture, media and social studies, this overview makes a fascinating visual guide for anyone interested in looking at the city of Rotterdam from a different angle" -- Publicaciones Arquitectura y Arte.

Exploring Big Historical Data: The Historian's Macroscope (Second Edition)
Author: Shawn Graham
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9811243050
Category : Computers
Languages : en
Pages : 305
Book Description
Every day, more and more kinds of historical data become available, opening exciting new avenues of inquiry but also new challenges. This updated and expanded book describes and demonstrates the ways these data can be explored to construct cultural heritage knowledge, for research and in teaching and learning. It helps humanities scholars to grasp Big Data in order to do their work, whether that means understanding the underlying algorithms at work in search engines or designing and using their own tools to process large amounts of information.Demonstrating what digital tools have to offer and also what 'digital' does to how we understand the past, the authors introduce the many different tools and developing approaches in Big Data for historical and humanistic scholarship, show how to use them, what to be wary of, and discuss the kinds of questions and new perspectives this new macroscopic perspective opens up. Originally authored 'live' online with ongoing feedback from the wider digital history community, Exploring Big Historical Data breaks new ground and sets the direction for the conversation into the future.Exploring Big Historical Data should be the go-to resource for undergraduate and graduate students confronted by a vast corpus of data, and researchers encountering these methods for the first time. It will also offer a helping hand to the interested individual seeking to make sense of genealogical data or digitized newspapers, and even the local historical society who are trying to see the value in digitizing their holdings.

Unbelief and Revolution
Author: Groen van Prinsterer
Publisher: Lexham Press
ISBN: 1683592298
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 270
Book Description
God's word illumines the darkness of society. Groen van Prinsterer's Unbelief and Revolution is a foundational work addressing the inherent tension between religion and modernity. As a historian and politician, Groen was intimately familiar with the growing divide between secular culture and the church in his time. Rather than embrace this division, these lectures, originally published in 1847, argue for a renewed interaction between the two spheres. Groen's work served as an inspiration for many contemporary theologians, and as a mentor to Abraham Kuyper, he had a profound impact on Kuyper's famous public theology. Harry Van Dyke, the original translator, reintroduces this vital contribution to our understanding of the relationship between religion and society.
