Blue foods — aquatic foods captured or farmed in marine and freshwater systems — play a key role in feeding and nourishing the world by providing highly accessible and affordable sources of protein and micronutrients for over 3.2 billion people and supporting the jobs of 58.5 million people, and the livelihoods of 600 million people. In the past 71-year period, blue foods have significantly expanded from 19.9 million tons in 1950 to 214 million tons in 2020. Yet, with 811 million people suffering from hunger and 3 billion people unable to afford a healthy diet, blue food production is poised to continue to expand in the future. However, the expansion of aquaculture and fisheries has also raised a series of ecological and environmental issues, such as biodiversity loss, environmental pollution (plastic pollution, antibiotic pollution, nitrogen and phosphorus emissions, etc.), land and freshwater use, overfishing, habitat degradation etc. In parallel, the continuously growing demand for blue food has been challenged by unprecedented environmental changes, such as climate change, ocean acidification, water pollution (microplastics, antibiotics, persistent pollutants), etc. But compared to other animal-sourced foods, blue food can remain an imperative component of sustainable food system solutions by reducing the environmental footprint and relieving pressure on overburdened terrestrial systems. Therefore, it is important to understand the challenges and priorities of the blue food transformation in order to jointly promote food safety and environmental sustainability.

The National Research Council's Science and Technology for Sustainability Program hosted two workshops in 2011 addressing the sustainability challenges associated with food security for all. The first workshop, Measuring Food Insecurity and Assessing the Sustainability of Global Food Systems, explored the availability and quality of commonly used indicators for food security and malnutrition; poverty; and natural resources and agricultural productivity. It was organized around the three broad dimensions of sustainable food security: (1) availability, (2) access, and (3) utilization. The workshop reviewed the existing data to encourage action and identify knowledge gaps. The second workshop, Exploring Sustainable Solutions for Increasing Global Food Supplies, focused specifically on assuring the availability of adequate food supplies. How can food production be increased to meet the needs of a population expected to reach over 9 billion by 2050? Workshop objectives included identifying the major challenges and opportunities associated with achieving sustainable food security and identifying needed policy, science, and governance interventions. Workshop participants discussed long term natural resource constraints, specifically water, land and forests, soils, biodiversity and fisheries. They also examined the role of knowledge, technology, modern production practices, and infrastructure in supporting expanded agricultural production and the significant risks to future productivity posed by climate change. Coastal areas are commonly defined as the interface or transition areas between land and sea, including large inland lakes. Overall, about 50–70 % of the global population live within 100 km of the coastline covering only about 4 % of earth’s land, thereby drawing heavily on coastal and marine habitats for food, building sites, transportation, recreational areas, and waste disposal. The people of these zones depend mainly on low productive agriculture due to several constraints such as prolonged water logging and drainage congestion in predominantly low-lying areas with heavy soils during the wet season, preponderance of saline and acid sulphate soils, scarcity of good quality irrigation water, particularly in the dry season, seawater intrusion into adjoining lands, and water pollution due to eutrophication, and others affecting the aquatic habitats, etc. Carbon sequestration in coastal areas, such as, marshes, lagoons, etc. has significant influence on soil quality, and the carbon pool in soils as well as their impacts on the environment. Over and above these, the coastal areas are prone to disasters due to climate change leading to colossal loss of lives and properties in many areas. Forestry and mangrove dynamics, in particular, because of their continuing diminishing nature, are also subjects of interest affecting the ecology of coastal zones requiring appropriate attention. The international symposium held in this context on ‘ Transforming Coastal Zones for Sustainable Food and Income Security ’ in virtual mode in March, 2021 offered scope to present and discuss various thematic areas by eminent scientists from all over the world. Food security has been persistently recognized in global discourse as one of the world’s main challenges. While some progress has been made towards ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food for all people all year round (SDG Target 2.1) or eradicating all forms of malnutrition (SDG Target 2.2), over 800 million people are estimated to suffer from chronic hunger. With outputs from capture fisheries stagnating over the past few decades, aquaculture holds the potential to play crucial roles in achieving food security, but its importance for food security and nutrition has often been undervalued, and concerns exist regarding its environmental footprint. The rapid expansion of aquaculture has consequences relating to environmental sustainability, but aquaculture nonetheless holds the potential to significantly contribute to human food security. The goal of this collection is to highlight the contribution of aquaculture to food security through the development of sound and sustainable production practices. The focus will include all three pillars of sustainability: environmental sustainability (production technologies that optimize fish production and/or minimize significant environmental disruptions or impacts), economic sustainability (value chain analyses, market access for fish products, policy analysis), and social and community sustainability (socially-responsible aquaculture practices contributing to food security and well-being).
