Book Description
Green salamanders (Aneides aeneus) seasonal activity patterns have not been well documented across their range. The species exhibits high site fidelity to crevices in sandstone and limestone rock outcroppings, however, it is unclear why they select these habitats. Two sites at the Red River Gorge in Kentucky were monitored from 1 June 2006 to 30 July 2007. Each site was throroughly searched and crevices used by green salamanders (19 crevices) marked as well as the three closest unused crevices (57 crevices). Crevice height off the ground, width, length, aspect and depth were determined for all used and unused crevices. During weekly visits to both study sites, crevice temperature and percent relative humidity were recorded. I found no significant difference between the temperature of used and unused crevices, however, the used crevices provided a high, stable percent relative humidity (approximately 92%) compared to unused crevices which had a lower, fluctuating humidity (approximately 60-85%). The physical characteristics of the used and unused crevices did not differ significantly. These results indicate green salamanders apparently use a crevice because it provides a consistently moist environment.

“Authoritative and comprehensive—provides an up-to-date description of the tool box of methods for inventorying and monitoring the diverse spectrum of reptiles. All biodiversity scientists will want to have it during project planning and as study progresses. A must for field biologists, conservation planners, and biodiversity managers.”—Jay M. Savage, San Diego State University “Kudos to the editors and contributors to this book. From the perspective of a non-ecologist such as myself, who only occasionally needs to intensively sample a particular site or habitat, the quality and clarity of this book has been well worth the wait.”—Jack W. Herpetology has always been one of the most exciting disciplines of zoology. During the past few years the field has continued to grow, yet it has been plagued by scarcity of comprehensive, up-to-date textbooks containing the most important developments. This timely book fills that void. Through skillful synthesis, the author summarizes the diversity in the biology of living amphibians and reptiles and describes the breadth of current herpetological research. Topics covered include the evolution, classification, development, reproduction, population, and environmental issues surrounding the study of amphibians and reptiles. Designed as an advanced undergraduate textbook, Herpetology is a valuable resource for students, practitioners, and interested amateurs alike. - Provides an incisive survey and much needed update of the field - Emphasizes the biological diversity among amphibians and reptiles - Details the most recent research findings, citing ke

Book Description
The Teeth of Non-Mammalian Vertebrates is the first comprehensive publication devoted to the teeth and dentitions of living fishes, amphibians and reptiles. The book presents a comprehensive survey of the amazing variety of tooth forms among non-mammalian vertebrates, based on descriptions of approximately 400 species belonging to about 160 families. The text is lavishly illustrated with more than 600 high-quality color and monochrome photographs of specimens gathered from top museums and research workers from around the world, supplemented by radiographs and micro-CT images. This stimulating work discusses the functional morphology of feeding, the attachment of teeth, and the relationship of tooth form to function, with each chapter accompanied by a comprehensive, up-to-date reference list. Following the descriptions of the teeth and dentitions in each class, four chapters review current topics with considerable research activity: tooth development; tooth replacement; and the structure, formation and evolution of the dental hard tissues. This timely book, authored by internationally recognized teachers and researchers in the field, also reflects the resurgence of interest in the dentitions of non-mammalian vertebrates as experimental systems to help understand genetic changes in evolution of teeth and jaws. Features more than 600 images, including numerous high-quality photographs from internationally-recognized researchers and world class collections Offers guidance on tooth morphology for classification and evolution of vertebrates Provides detailed coverage of the dentition of all living groups of non-mammalian vertebrates
