Book Description
Nothing is simple for Rickey Parkitt-Mann, an innocent and impressionable boy who relocates with his family to No. 1 Fighter Wing Air Force Base in Marville, France. The year is 1956, and at the tender age of six, Rickey is thrown into early adolescence, which is filled with surprise, excitement, and insecurity. He lives with his mother, father, and little sister in C-block of the Private Married Quarters (PMQs), eleven miles from the Base. The PMQs are their own little microcosm, with no phones, television, or police to regulate what goes on. Rickey meets a variety of friends and foes (some who seem to be both), including the Air Force Brats—one of the PMQs’ infamous boy gangs. Teased, taunted, and taken for granted, Rickey quickly matures beyond his years. When he’s not navigating the slippery rungs of schoolyard hierarchies, he also travels around Europe with his family, camping, meeting odd characters, and learning more about the world. His life of adventure and learning is occasionally punctuated by moments of shock and tragedy, including the suicide—perhaps murder—of a burgeoning friend. In this exciting work of autobiographical fiction, Richard Andrew Parke-Taylor brings us a stunningly detailed and realistic portrait of boyhood and distant life in the wake of the Second World War. Oscillating between moments of humor and horror, Memories Best Forgotten will rivet the reader until the dramatic final pages.

BENEDICT MACDONALD - Join Sophie Pavelle on a low-carbon journey around Britain in search of ten animals and habitats threatened by climate change in the 21st century. Forget-me-not – a beautiful flower and a plea from our islands' wildlife. When climate change has driven dozens of our most charismatic species to extinction, will they be forgotten? Like many of her generation, Sophie Pavelle is determined to demand action on climate change. In her hilarious and thought-provoking first book, she describes the trips she took to see ten rare native species: species that could disappear by 2050 and be forgotten by the end of the century if their habitats continue to decline. Sophie challenged herself to find them the low-carbon way, travelling the length of Britain on foot, by bicycle, in an electric car, by kayak, on ferries and in a lot of trains. From Bodmin Moor to the Orkney Islands, Sophie encountered species on the frontline of climate change in Britain. Which are going to be seriously affected, and why? Could some bounce back from the brink? Or are we too late to save them? Forget Me Not is a clarion call: we all need to play a part in tackling this most existential of threats. Everyone can see wildlife in the British Isles without contributing to its destruction. With joyful irreverence, Sophie shows us we can dare to hope. Journey with her, and she may even inspire you to take action for nature and head out on your own low-carbon adventure.

They were mute, deaf and later blind; I was their ears, mouth and later eyes Allegedly, curse on my mother from her father for marring a Black man. Nothing stopped me from loving, caring, being proud of them. Bigotry, hatred, ignorance engulfed my childhood in a providently Indian village. We were dehumanized like animals, freaks and slaves. Even the good Madras people of Whim couldnt stop the horror of being Mixed. In the house of silence, practicing my vocabulary/hearing on animals. Am an animal lover till today. Was told am Indian, speak, pray in Hindi and Sanskrit, keep away from Blacks; they eat Indian children with curly hair. After ten, this barefooted Indian found her other half. Allowed to enter their homes, gravitated and become a runaway. Giant ants, deepwater, dunce cap, ostracized Mommy died, Cinderella abuse stopped when my dearest Uncle Bertram set me free on an elephant - five-dollar bill. Like barnacle, I clamped to the first man in freedom town. He gave me three beautiful children, when nothing left to clamp onto, he forced me to fly without wings. Flew to America, cold, homeless, penniless. A Stranger gave me some silver. I slept under friends table, a kind family made me and mine American Citizens. No job was too many. Goodwill perfect for low-maintenance like us. Education and focus, #1 priority I thank/forgive those haters who looked down at me, they gave me the will to rise. Book Description
Contemporary with the Israelite kingdom of Solomon and David, the Nubian conqueror Piye (Piankhy), and the Assyrian Assurbanipal, Egypt s Third Intermediate Period is of critical interest not only to Egyptologists but also to biblical historians, Africanists, and Assyriologists. Spanning six centuries and as many dynasties, the turbulent era extended from approximately 1100 to 650 B.C.E. This volume, the first extensive collection of Third Intermediate Period inscriptions in any language, includes the primary sources for the history, society, and religion of Egypt during this complicated period, when Egypt was ruled by Libyan and Nubian dynasties and had occasional relations with Judah and the encroaching, and finally invading, Assyrian Empire. It includes the most significant texts of all genres, newly translated and revised. This volume will serve as a source book and companion for the most thorough study of the history of the period, Kitchen s The Third Intermediate Period in Egypt.
