Book Description
This report presents the results of studies to examine the feasibility of, and provide a solution for improving the conditions for navigation on Bayou Grand Caillou from its intersection with the Houma Navigational Canal north to its intersection with Bayou Provost. Investigations during the study identified and analyzed, in addition to the no-action alternative, all alternatives for improving navigation conditions. These investigations showed that only structural measures were feasible to solve this navigation problem. During the investigation process, the study area was broken into two reaches due to differences in type and frequency of use of the bayou. Examination of economic considerations showed that both the reaches were incrementally justified. The final analysis showed that plan 16 had a high benefit-cost ratio and the highest net benefits over cost and it was designated the recommended plan. This plan considered bucket dredging to 10 feet of depth by 60 feet of width for the 5.3 miles of the bayou south of Bayou Provost, and hydraulic dredging to 14 feet of depth by 90 feet of width for the remaining 2 miles of the bayou to the Houma Navigation Canal.
