Overcoming Technical Barriers to the Sustainable Development of Competitive Marine Aquaculture in the United States
Author:
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Aquaculture
Languages : en
Pages : 120
Book Description
"Aquaculture is the fastest growing form of food production in the world. It is also a significant source of protein for people in many countries, including the United States. Globally, nearly half the fish consumed by humans is produced by fish farms. This worldwide trend toward aquaculture production is expected to continue. At the same time, demand for safe, healthy seafood is also expected to grow. It is clear that the United States needs a robust aquaculture industry to meet rising seafood demand and to enhance domestic commercial and recreational fish and shellfish stocks. Technology innovation is a major source of the nation's economic well-being. Therefore it is critical to identify the technological roadblocks which impede innovation as well as identify the needs in measurements which are linked to technology innovation. The primary function of the Addressing Barriers to Technological Innovations in Aquaculture workshop was to generate information from private and public sectors to ensure that the nation's innovation and measurement needs in aquaculture were identified. If financial and other resources are made available and there is sufficient stakeholder interest, a research and innovation action plan could be developed based on this assessment."--Forward.

An Introduction to Sustainable Aquaculture
Author: Daniel PeƱalosa Martinell
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040000096
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 359
Book Description
This new textbook provides an accessible introduction to sustainable aquaculture through its relationship with three key pillars: the environment, the economy, and society. As the demand for seafood keeps increasing, aquaculture is considered one of the most promising and sustainable ways to satisfy this demand with nutritious and high-quality food. It is important to understand, therefore, the wider role and impact aquaculture has on the environment, the economy, and society. The book begins by providing a foundational introduction to aquaculture and sustainability, discussing the complex and interdependent relationship that exists between the two. The core text of the book is divided into four parts which focus on the environment, economics, social impacts, and governance and technologies. Chapters examine key issues surrounding climate change, food security, new technologies, bioeconomics and risk analysis, international cooperation, employment, and animal welfare, with the book concluding with a chapter examining the future directions and challenges for the aquaculture industry. The book draws on global case studies and each chapter is accompanied by recommended reading and chapter review questions to support student learning. This book will serve as an essential guide for students of aquaculture, fisheries management, and sustainable food, as well as practitioners and policymakers engaged in sustainable fishery development.

Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 60
Book Description
This report explores sustainable aquaculture in the Pacific Islands region, offering potential strategies for growth in 13 countries facing threats to food security and livelihoods. Sustainable aquaculture is a promising solution for the Pacific Islands region to overcome the challenges posed by climate change, overfishing, unsustainable fishing methods, and pollution. This report identifies the key challenges and opportunities for sustainable aquaculture in the region and presents potential strategies for sustainable growth in three representative geographies. The report highlights the importance of additional investment and technical support to achieve sustainable growth in aquaculture in the region. In addition to addressing the primary focus of the report, the second paragraph provides complementary information, such as the specific challenges facing the region and the importance of sustainable aquaculture. The report will inform future efforts by the FAO and regional partners to support sustainable aquaculture in the Pacific Islands region. By providing potential strategies for sustainable growth, this report will be a valuable resource for policymakers, investors, and other stakeholders working to improve food security and livelihoods in the region.

Changing the Face of the Waters
Author: World Bank
Publisher: World Bank Publications
ISBN: 0821370162
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 210
Book Description
Aquaculture the farming of fish and aquatic plants has become the world's fastest-growing food production sector, even as the amount of wild fish caught in our seas and freshwaters declines. From fish foods and pharmaceuticals to management of entire aquatic ecosystems, acquaculture is truly changing the face of the waters. Increased growth, however, brings increased risk, and aquaculture now lies at a crossroads. One direction points toward the giant strides in productivity, industry concentration, and product diversification. Another direction points toward the dangers of environmental degradation and the marginalization of small fish farmers. Yet another direction invites aquaculture to champion the poor and provide vital environmental services to stressed aquatic environments. 'Changing the Face of the Waters' offers a cutting-edge analysis of the critical challenges facing aquaculture, balancing aquaculture's role in economic growth with the need for sound management of natural resources. The book also provides guidance on sustainable aquaculture by evaluating alternative development pathways, placing particular emphasis on the application of lessons from Asia to Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Aimed at policy makers, planners, and scientists, this book provides a comprehensive frame of reference for orienting ideas and initiatives in this dynamic industry.

Perspectives for Sustainable Development of Nordic Aquaculture
Author: Trond W. Rosten
Publisher: Nordic Council of Ministers
ISBN: 9289325712
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 141
Book Description
Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing productions and the value of aquaculture is now about to pass the value of capture fisheries. Among the Nordic countries, Norway in particular has been able to create a large aquaculture industry with high growth rates over a number of years. The other Nordic countries have only had limited growth, but have a high unutilised potential. There is a need to identify opportunities and limitations for increased growth with due care for sustainability and environment. This report identifies seven focus areas with special potential for creation of a sustainable, competitive Nordic aquaculture sector. These areas are new feeds, better use and reuse of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon), value adding of by-products, technological and regional development, domestication of new species and reduction of energy consumption. The aquaculture sector with its strengths and weaknesses is described for each of the Nordic countries. The report is compiled on basis of contributions from a Nordic group of experts. It was presented at a seminar on Green Growth at the annual meeting of the Nordic Ministers of Fisheries in Trondheim, July 2012.
