Book Description
International Geophysics Series, Volume 2: Physics of the Aurora and Airglow explores certain physical aspects of aurora and airglow. This volume is composed of 13 chapters and begins with surveys of the theory and spectroscopic and photometric analyses of radiation from the upper atmosphere. The subsequent chapters treat the geographic distribution of aurora and its physical processes in the atmosphere. Other chapters examine the theory of hydrogen emission in aurora, resonance scattering by atmospheric sodium, the excitation of the oxygen red lines in the airglow, and an atlas of the auroral spectrum. A chapter focuses on the analysis of twilight observations for emission heights. The concluding chapters discuss the theory of day airglow, as well as the spectral photometry and excitation of the nightglow. This book is of value to geophysicists, theoreticians, and scientists of the allied fields of geophysics.

Book Description
The instrument currently in use for the spectroscopic and photometric observation of aurora and airglow are listed together with modifications and new developments of instrumentation. Modifications have been made to a two channel rocket-borne photometer that is used for measuring 1.27 micrometer radiation. A birefringent photometer has been modified to make it more useful for twilight measurements. Investigations have been carried out on the rotational temperatures derived from OH emissions. Further observations of 1.27 micrometer oxygen emission have been made from both the ground and rocket flights. These measurements and others have been analysed so that many of the temporal and spatial properties of this emission are now known. An auroral component of this emission has also been investigated. Considerable theoretical investigations have been carried out on the photochemistry of oxygen and hydrogen to accompany the measurement of the OH and 1.27 micrometer O2 emissions. Hydrogen and atomic oxygen emissions have been measured in a hydrogen auroral arc. The results of analysis on a decade of twilight sodium density measruements are presented. (Author).

Book Description
Summary descriptions are presented of various studies and programs which were conducted on airglow and aurora phenomena, in conjunction with related events, in support of the upper-atmosphere research program. Studies involving oxygen red-line emission, rocket measurements of sodium dayglow, upper atmospheric temperature measurements from the N2+ first negative band system and an observed red arc which were in the final phases of study, are presented either in an abstracted form or in preliminary rough-draft form prior to publication. Programs in progress but not completed are briefly described. A general description of various types of instrumentation for making optical studies of the light in the atmosphere is given. The presentation offers information useful in the design of the instruments rather than detailed particulars of any one design. (Author).
