This case study investigated athletes' use of a specific social-media platform--Twitter. Social media are a rising force in marketing and have been fully embraced by the sport industry, with teams, leagues, coaches, athletes, and managers establishing presences. Primarily these presences have been focused on Twitter, a microblogging site that allows users to post their personal thoughts in 140 characters or less. Athletes, in particular, have engaged in tweeting at a fast pace, which raises the question, What are they saying? This case study investigated the tweets of athletes over a 7-d period in an attempt to answer that question. The findings indicate that athletes are talking predominantly about their personal lives and responding to fans' queries through Twitter. The results indicate that Twitter is a powerful tool for increasing fan-athlete interaction.

"The research reveals the differences in audience perceived credibility between an athlete's tweets and a sports reporter's story. Because audiences are drawn to Twitter accounts of athletes, the reporters' sources have become their competition. The study also investigates the difference between how often audiences choose Twitter over a reporter's story to obtain their sports news. A survey of RIT students measured how often participants obtain sports news from sports reporters' print or online stories and athletes' personal Twitter accounts. The audience's perceived credibility of the sources was also measured. Findings suggest audiences choose online articles as their source for sports news although heavy sports fans also use Twitter. Celebrity as a practice on Twitter is a new theory defined as the appearance and performance of 'backstage' access by celebrity practitioners, referred to as professional athletes in this study, through affiliation, intimacy, authenticity and sincerity, and fan maintenance (Markwick & boyd, 2011). Previous studies have examined professional athletes' use of Twitter to build their brands (Parmentier & Fischer, 2012; Fischer, Smith & Yongjian, 2012; Yan, 2011), however none have examined their use of celebrity as a practice on Twitter. This study served to extend previous research by using a content analysis to examine how professional athletes can practice celebrity to build their brands through both user-generated content and linguistic tools used on Twitter. Descriptive statistics including Chi Square tests, t-tests, and Pearson Correlation tests were used to satisfy the objectives of this study. A key finding from this study was both NBA players and WNBA players practice celebrity on Twitter through user-generated content and linguistics tools. However, the specific type of user-generated content shared and the specific linguistic tools used to share that content varied. This study found that NBA players are followed 122 times more than WNBA players suggesting popularity differentials between male and female professional athletes exist both offline and online. Interestingly for both NBA players and WNBA players, no correlation was found between number of followers versus the number following, total number of tweets, tweeting frequency, and total number of linguistics tools used.

In recent years many elite professional athletes have been criticized in the media for questionable on and off the field behavior. How these athletes use social media to reframe or repair their public images was the focus of this research. Research on social media has grown in recent years, but still remains relatively shallow, making the strong correlation between social media and sport the ideal breeding ground for this exploratory research. This study confined social media use to the way in which two purposefully selected professional athletes - Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong - use Twitter to self-present and directly communicate with their followers. A quantitative content analysis was conducted to collect data for this research. To quantify the information, 592 Tweets were coded and then analyzed using SPSS. Previous literature (Dittmer, 2010; Hambrick, Frederick & Sanderson, 2013) suggested heavily scrutinized professional athletes used Twitter to promote a personal brand and challenge competing media narratives, in turn compromising the media's role as agenda setter (Cohen, 1963). According to Cassidy (2006), such athletes are overriding the journalist's traditional role as gatekeeper, thus redefining selective exposure's impact in today's changing media landscape (Messing & Westwood, 2012). This study found that elite professional athletes are using this new flow of information to promote images of self that bypass media misrepresentation (Goffman, 1959). This research further concluded that such athletes use Twitter to unhinge their images from the association of negative press, but in fundamentally different ways. --Page iv.

It has been well documented that professional athletes have been actively using Twitter to communicate directly with each other and their fans; however, relatively little media and/or mass communications research has explored the effect this direct communication channel has had on the role of journalists who cover these athletes. Traditionally, sports reporters have served in a gatekeeping role, deciding what news and information is worthy of coverage on the beat. The present study sought to assess how, if at all, sports reporters covering the four major U.S. sports -- baseball, basketball, football, and hockey -- are using the Twitter feeds of athletes in their coverage and what, if any, impact the Twitter presence of athletes has had on their role as gatekeepers. A search of sports beat coverage in eight daily newspapers during a one-month period yielded a total of 74 articles in which the Twitter feed of an athlete was used as a news source. A textual analysis of these articles revealed that tweets are used in place of quotes when an interview is not possible, as a source of breaking news about the athlete and/or his team, as the genesis of a story, and to gauge public sentiment toward an athlete. Interviews with 20 of the sports reporters covering the four major sports at the eight newspapers and five of the editors at these outlets confirmed these uses. Respondents also acknowledged that Twitter has enabled athletes to communicate directly with their fans without involving the traditional sports media. However, most the respondents also noted that the limitations of the medium kept their roles as reporters relevant to the fan/reader.
