Book Description
Excerpt from Oriental Rugs From the old city of Lule in Persia, he answered; my father was born there; it is a fine old town. It was plain he was going on to tell the threadbare narrative, as venerable as the city of Lule, and as fictitious, of how this particular bit of carpet was more than a century old-was, in fact, an heirloom in his family; of how his father had died just after bringing it all the way to this country, and it could now be had for the wretched sum of fifty dollars, because its associations made him so sad. As a matter of fact, the name Lule is a corruption of the French roulez, and is given by Levantine dealers, whose business is largely transacted in Gallic, to a class of carpets so thick, so tightly woven, that they cannot be folded, but must of necessity be rolled up for shipment. Book Description
Excerpt from Oriental Rugs in the Home: A Monograph While the ordinary carpet of commerce is just a carpet, and nothing more, the Oriental Rug is a thing apart, and worthy of the interest and attention that one may give to its selection. But its very individuality, and the many patterns, designs, kinds and sizes in which it may be obtained, suggest the value of a little special information. Book Description
Excerpt from Oriental Rugs, Antique and Modern By study and cultivation the European as well as the American is growing to value more highly the products of Oriental art. When the old sea captains carried on trade with Japan, they imported into Europe large quantities of Imari ware, which the Japanese purposely decorated with crude and vulgar colours to meet the less refined taste of the Europeans, who regarded many of them as fine speci mens of ceramic art and studiously Copied them in their factories. But so great has been the change in artistic taste since then that now they are valued principally as objects of curiosity. Likewise, many beautiful Japanese Makimonos, in which a few strong lines gave but a hint of the essential thought, formerly passed before the eyes of Europeans as the paintings of semi-barbarians. But now we begin to see, as did Whistler, that they are often the prod ucts of great genius and that they express thought and feeling with marvellous power. There has been a similar growth in the appreciation of Oriental rugs. Even within the last generation this growth has been apparent, so that the few who wisely bought those old worn pieces which thirty years ago hung at doors of little shops where dark-faced foreigners invited acquaintance, are now the envy of the many who, too late, have learned that to-day they can scarcely be bought at any price. Book Description
Excerpt from How to Know Oriental Rugs: A Handbook The demand for Oriental rugs in America increases rapidly. A few years ago they were little known out side the seaboard cities and a limited number of collections elsewhere; but to-day there is scarcely a town in the country, East or West, where they are not used and more or less intelligently discussed. They may now be said to have become a permanent factor in house-furnishing everywhere. We have turned to the products of the East because they possess greater artistic merit than the work produced in this country or Europe.
