Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-Seventh Annual Report of the Trustees of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind, to the Corporation, 1859 In order to meet these expenses, and also to carry on the work of printing books and improving the apparatus for instructing the blind, the Trustees have been obliged to encroach upon the capital of the Institution, and to rely upon the liberality of the humane. This reliance has not, thus far, been ill founded. The Institution has received several lega cies; and where no special direction has been given to fund the capital, it has been merged with the common fund, and used in such manner as seemed advisable for the immediate interest of the pupils, or for the advancement of the cause of education of the blind in general. This cause the Trustees have ever had at heart; and it has been their wish to do a full share, to say the very least, in its promotion. Book Description
Excerpt from Twenty-First Annual Report of the Trustees of the Perkins Institution and Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind: To the Corporation The undersigned Trustees respectfully report as follows, for the year ending September 30. The institution has been conducted upon the same general system, and by the same officers and teachers, as during the last and many former years. The Trustees have kept general supervision by their visiting committees, and controlling expenditures by their auditors, but confided the immediate management to the Director and teachers. The results Show that the responsibilities and duties devolved upon them have been faithfully met and discharged. The expenditures have been larger than usual, owing partly to increased cost of living, and partly to purchase of new musical instruments. Strict economy, however, has been used, and frugality has been during this, as during former years, a marked feature of the establishment. Book Description
Excerpt from Fifteenth Annual Report of the Trustees of the Perkins Institution: And Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind to the Corporation It is difficult to ascertain what would be the average mortality among an equal number of persons in ordi nary life and of the same age. The best way that has occurred to me is to ascertain the mortality among the students and graduates of our colleges during the last ten years. The result is as follows. Book Description
Excerpt from Forty-First Annual Report of the Trustees of the Perkins Institution: And Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind; October, 1872 It is desirable for the cause of the education of the blind that our Institution should receive all the blind children of New England, as they make enough, but not now too many, for advantageous classification: yet, it is never desirable that undue reputation should be given to any individual, or to any State. But there is a wider and more conclusive argument against retaining the last word of the present title. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
