Amory Houghton, Sr., chairman emeritus of the Coming Glass Works, former United States ambassador to France, and Institute Trustee and Trustee Emeritus since 1967, died at the Medical University Hospital in Charles ton, South Carolina, on February 21, 1981. He was preceded on the Institute Board by his father, Alanson B. Houghton, who served as the first Chairman of the Institute and as its President. Amory Houghton was succeeded on the Board by his son James R. Houghton, who has been an Institute Trustee since 1971. The service of this illustrious family to the Institute over the five decades of its existence has been exemplary in every way. The total available as reduced by total expenditures in the twelve months of fiscal year 1981 and the warrants issued in the lapse period to pay fiscal year 1981 obligations equal the budget ary balance to begin the next fiscal year. The budgetary balance in several funds may be negative to the extent that warrants issued in the lapse period exceed the available balance on June 30, 1981. The deficiencies in these budgetary balances are compensated by transfers or cash receipts during the lapse period.
