Memories and reality change from line to line. The reader should pay attention, as the stream of consciousness, in a chaotic inner monologue, sometimes seems like a mess, but it is not. The thread is there. The narration mixes past and present in the same paragraph and even in the same sentence. One moment, walking on the street, something he sees reminds him of something from childhood, and off we go, to then read a dialogue with someone in the present.
