Book Description
As part of its Multi-Hazards Demonstration Project, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) is undertaking a multidisciplinary "Golden Guardian" (GG) exercise for assessing the resiliency of Southern California (SC) following a Magnitude 7.8 earthquake along a segment of the southern San Andreas Fault that extends from Bombay Beach along the Salton Sea To Lake Hughes in the Traverse Range north of Los Angeles. The objective of this project has been to perform a single deterministic analysis of the seismic risks to the SC highway system due to the Magnitude 7.8 scenario earthquake that is being considered under this GG exercise. This analysis has been conducted using a new methodology and software package that is names REDARS (tm) 2 (Risks from Earthquake DAmage to Roadway Systems). REDARS(tm) 2 estimates of post-earthquake traffic flows, travel times, and trip demands, potential losses that result from earthquake-induced traffic and travel disruptions throughout the system as well as repair costs.

Book Description
This report addresses the ability of transportation facilities in California to survive four postulated earthquakes that are based on historical events. The survival of highways, railroads, ports, airports, and pipelines is investigated following indidicual earthquakes along the San Andreas and Hayward faults in Northern California and the San Andreas and Newport-Inglewood faults in Southern California. Each of the four example earthquakes would cause extensive damage to transportation routes in California; however, most damage would be of a local nature, affecting either the San Francisco Bay Area or the Los Angeles area. Major intercity routes would survive intact outside the damaged area. The report identifies critical routes and highlights the need for emergency planning to focus repairs on these routes.

Book Description
Magnitude 8 is the archetypal natural disaster defined. To understand the cataclysmic earthquake that will tear California apart one day, Philip L. Fradkin has written a dramatic history of earthquakes and an eloquent guide to the San Andreas Fault, the world's best-known tectonic landscape. The author includes vivid stories of earthquakes elsewhere: in New England, the central Mississippi River Valley, New York City, Europe, and the Far East. Always, he combines human and natural drama to place the reader at the epicenter of the most instantaneous and unpredictable of all the Earth's phenomena. Following the San Andreas Fault from Cape Mecino to Mexico--canoeing the fault line in northern California and walking underground through the Hollywood fault--noted environmental historian Philip L. Fradkin reclaims the human dimensions of earthquakes from the science-dominated accounts.
