Book Description
With the recent discovery of the giant magnetocaloric effect and the beginning of extensive research on the properties of Gd5(Si(subscript x)Ge{sub 1-x})4, a necessity has developed for a better understanding of the microstructure and crystal structure of this family of rare earth compounds with startling phenomenological properties. The aim of this research is to characterize the microstructure of the Gd5(Si(subscript x)Ge{sub 1-x})4, with X (asymptotically equal to) 2 and its phase change by using both transmission and electron microscopes. A brief history of past work on Gd5(Si(subscript x)Ge{sub 1-x})4 is necessary to understand this research in its proper context.

Book Description
The material Gd5(Si[Subscript x]Ge[Subscript 1-x])4, with x [Equals approximately symbol] 2 was investigated using electron microscopy. The material possesses a complex crystallographic structure and undergoes a unique, reversible, transformation at low temperatures and an irreversible high temperature transformation. Alloys produced by induction melting and arc melting were examined and the phases identified. The results of SEM and TEM studies of the high, room and low temperature microstructures are reported. Direct observation of the transformation with a discussion on the mechanism of the reversible, low temperature, phase transformation is detailed.

Book Description
By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.

Book Description
Covering fundamental research as well as real-world applications, this first book on CMAs at an introductory level treats everything from atomistic details to surface processing. Comprehensive, self-contained chapters provide readers with the latest knowledge on the most salient features of the topic, selected in terms of their relevance to potential technological applications. Edited by one of the most distinguished authorities on quasicrystals and this most important of their subclasses, the contributions elucidate aspects of CMAs from a particular viewpoint: physical and chemical characteristics in the sub-nanometer regime, mesoscale phenomena, preparation and processing of thin films, and large-scale engineering properties. The whole is rounded off by a look at the commercial potential of CMA-based applications. For PhD students and lecturers alike.

Book Description
Volume 17 of the Handbook on the Properties of Magnetic Materials, as the preceding volumes, has a dual purpose. As a textbook it is intended to be of assistance to those who wish to be introduced to a given topic in the field of magnetism without the need to read the vast amount of literature published. As a work of reference it is intended for scientists active in magnetism research. To this dual purpose, Volume 17 of the Handbook is composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities. In each of these articles an extensive description is given in graphical as well as in tabular form, much emphasis being placed on the discussion of the experimental material in the framework of physics, chemistry and material science. It provides the readership with novel trends and achievements in magnetism.*composed of topical review articles written by leading authorities *intended to be of assistance to those who wish to be introduced to a given topic in the field of magnetism *as a work of reference it is intended for scientists active in magnetism research *provide the readership with novel trends and achievements in magnetism
