Book Description
A critical survey of the published literature concerning modelling of liquid-liquid extraction columns, mass transfer studies in extraction towers and the influence of backmixing on concentration profiles, extraction efficiency and the number of transfer units has been made to determine the most accurate correlations for computing the true number of transfer units or the true overall mass transfer coefficients in backmixed solvent extraction columns. These parameters are of great significance and are very useful in the design and performance evaluation of solvent extraction columns. Several approximate correlations of these parameters as a function of column geometry, operating conditions, and physical properties of the liquid systems involved have been developed and it is possible to use mathematical models in the interpretation and analysis of experimental data to determine which correlations appear to be most accurate and easiest to use. The results of the data analysis, together with the best possible estimate of the extraction efficiency were applied to a differential backmixing model to obtain concentration profiles in an extraction column.

Recent Advances in Liquid-Liquid Extraction
Author: C. Hanson
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 1483151662
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 601
Book Description
Recent Advances in Liquid-liquid Extraction focuses on the applications of liquid extraction. The selection first discusses solvent extraction. Concerns include organic and inorganic separations, mass transfer process, solvent extraction economics, and coalescence in liquid-liquid systems. The book focuses on the chemistry of solvent extraction. Extraction by acidic organophosphorus compounds; extraction by phosphorus-bonded oxygen-donor solvents; extraction by high-molecular weight amines; and synergistic extraction are elaborated. The book also focuses on industrial organic processes; industrial contacting equipment; response characteristics and control of extraction processes; and calculation of contactors with longitudinal mixing. The selection presents the study of longitudinal mixing in liquid-liquid contactors. Rotating disc contactors, packed columns, vibrating plate extractors, and Oldshue-Rushton columns are described. The text also discusses heat transfer by direct liquid-liquid contact and the coalescence of liquid droplets and liquid dispersion. The selection is a vital source of data for readers interested in liquid extraction.

Mass Transfer with Chemical Reaction in Multiphase Systems: Two-phase systems
Author: Erdoğan Alper
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 700
Book Description
The phenomenon of "mass transfer with chemical reaction" takes place whenever one phase is brought into contact with one or more other phases not in chemical equilibrium with it. This phenomenon has industrial, biological and physiological importance. In chemical process engineering, it is encountered in both separ ation processes and reaction engineering. In some cases, a chemical reaction may deliberately be employed for speeding up the rate of mass transfer and/or for increasing the capacity of the solvent; in other cases the multiphase reaction system is a part of the process with the specific aim of product formation. Finally, in some cases, for instance "distillation with chemical reaction," both objectives are involved. Although the subject is clearly a chemical engineering undertakin, it requires often a good understanding of other subjects, such as chemistry and fluid mechanics etc., leading to publications in diversified areas. On the other har.d, the subject has always been a major field and one of the most fruitful for chemical engineers."
