Costs of replacement and maintenance of expansion joints are often a large part of the costs associated with bridge maintenance. To replace these expansion joints or eliminate some of them on structures could greatly reduce the costs. Link slab is a new design approach, which could replace the traditional expansion joints. A link slab is the portion of the bridge deck that connects two adjacent simple-span girders. Link slabs also reduce the damage to the substructure of bridges due to water penetration and debris accumulation in the expansion joint. The objective of this research is to validate the design assumptions associated with designing link slabs, investigate a limit states design procedure and develop a program for the long-term monitoring of an instrumented link slab. This thesis provides details about testing and analysis, which were useful in accomplishing the research objectives. It also provides information about the datalogger software that was used in this project and also details the computer program that was written in Microsoft Excel to aid in the data collection and sorting.

Integral Abutment Bridges (IABs) are jointless bridges in which the superstructure is cast monolithically with its substructure. Eliminating expansion joints from the superstructure reduces corrosion of bridge elements that typically result from leaking joints in traditional bridges. IABs have proven to be cost effective for both construction and life-cycle analysis. As a result, they are the standard single span highway bridge of choice by the majority of State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) across the country. Despite the widespread use of these bridges, there are no uniform guidelines in place. Factors such as pile orientation, design assumptions, maximum span length, skew angle, and curvature vary widely. A study of expansion joint performance was done to investigate typical problems with joints through information collected from meetings with Massachusetts DOT as well as survey results collected from DOT personnel from nine states in and around New England. Results highlight the many issues associated with expansion joints which have resulted in the preference to construct IABs whenever possible. The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) instrumented three IABs of increasing complexity for long term monitoring and analysis of their performance. The bridges include a straight bridge with 141 ft (43 m) span, a 15 degree skew bridge with 121 ft (37 m) span, and a two-span continuous curved structure with 11.25 degrees of curvature and 221 ft (68 m) total bridge length. This dissertation presents over five years of field data. Results are compared with three-dimensional finite element model predictions. Variations in response due to skew, curvature, and field conditions are addressed. The finite element models were the basis for a parametric study investigating the effect of pile orientation on IABs of varying length and skew angle. Results highlight the factors that affect optimal pile orientation to avoid pile yielding.

Jointless bridges, such as semi-integral and integral bridges, have become more popular in recent years because of their simplicity in the construction and the elimination of high costs related to joint maintenance. Prior research has shown that skewed semi-integral bridges tend to expand and rotate as the ambient air temperature increases through the season. As a result of the bridge movement, forces are generated and transferred to the wingwalls of the bridge. ODOT does not currently have a procedure to determine the forces generated in the wingwalls from the thermal expansion and rotation of skewed semi-integral bridges. In this study, two semi-integral bridges with skews were instrumented and monitored for behavior at the interface of the bridge's diaphragm and wingwall. A parametric analysis was also performed to determine the effects of different spans and bridge lengths on he magnitude of the forces. Based on the field results from the study it is recommended for the design of the wingwalls turned to run nearly parallel with the longitudinal axis of skewed semi-integral bridges should include a 100 psi loading at the wingwall/diaphragm interface from the thermal expansion of the bridge. In addition, analytical evaluations showed that longer spans and higher skews than allowed by ODOT's BDM could be used. However, additional considerations for larger movements and stresses generated at the wingwall/diaphragm interface would need to be considered in designs. Finally, bearing retainers in diaphragms, if used, require adequate cover to avoid spalling of concrete.
