Les sujets dyslipidémiques ont un risque accru de développer une athérosclérose et la prévention de la maladie coronaire constitue, aujourd'hui, la justification essentielle de la prise en charge thérapeutique du patient dyslipidémique. En prévention primaire, l'évaluation du risque cardiovasculaire global par une simple addition du nombre de facteurs de risque ou à l'aide d'équations de risque facilite les décisions thérapeutiques. En prévention secondaire, le risque cardiovasculaire est d'emblée élevé, il convient donc d'instaurer le plus tôt possible un traitement par statine, sauf cas particuliers. Les statines sont majoritairement prescrites de par leur efficacité démontrée sur le plan clinique et sur la baisse du LDL-C, meilleur indicateur d'efficacité de la prévention cardiovasculaire selon les nouvelles recommandations.
