Book Description
"The objectives of this study were to assess the current stock status of fishes in Bead Lake, Pend Oreille County, Washington and to identify factors that might limit fish production. Historical data (1978 to 2004) for ten water quality variables -- temperature, dissolved oxygen, phosphorous, nitrate, ammonia, turbidity, total suspended solids, fecal coliform, secchi disc transparency, chlorophyll a, and Carlson's trophic state index (TSI) -- were compiled and analyzed to determine trends over time. In 2004, primary productivity was assessed using the light/dark bottle method and secondary productivity by zooplankton and benthic macroinvertebrate sampling. An eight-month (April -- November) baseline fisheries survey was conducted using electrofishing, gillnetting, fyke netting, and minnow trapping techniques. Data were collected on fish species composition, catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE), age and growth, and feeding habits. The sport fishery was evaluated through monthly creel surveys (January 2004 - February 2005) to determine angler pressure, harvest and the economic value of the fishery"--Document.

Book Description
Visitors to Yellowstone National Park are drawn to the spectacular scenery, unique thermal features, and the large numbers of wild animals easily observed in their natural habitat. The thoughtful visitor to the park cannot help but be captivated by the unparalleled breadth of scientific knowledge needed to understand the intricate interrelationships that make up the yellowstone landscape. Knowing Yellowstone explores how scientists discover what they know about America's first national park and the surrounding lands. The chapter authors are scientists who represent the best of their fields of study. The science they describe is leading the way to our understanding of complex ecosystems worldwide.

Book Description
As aquaculture continues to grow at a rapid pace, understanding the engineering behind aquatic production facilities is of increasing importance for all those working in the industry. Aquaculture engineering requires knowledge of the many general aspects of engineering such as material technology, building design and construction, mechanical engineering, and environmental engineering. In this comprehensive book now in its second edition, author Odd-Ivar Lekang introduces these principles and demonstrates how such technical knowledge can be applied to aquaculture systems. Review of the first edition: 'Fish farmers and other personnel involved in the aquaculture industry, suppliers to the fish farming business and designers and manufacturers will find this book an invaluable resource. The book will be an important addition to the shelves of all libraries in universities and research institutions where aquaculture, agriculture and environmental sciences are studied and taught.' Aquaculture Europe 'A useful book that, hopefully, will inspire successors that focus more on warm water aquaculture and on large-scale mariculture such as tuna farming.' Cision

Book Description
Based on an international symposium and workshop hosted by the University of Hull International Fisheries Institute, this new reference includes expert reviews of the advantages and shortcomings of all current techniques and management strategies used in assessment of freshwater fish stocks worldwide. In addition to the core reports, overview papers present a summary of the current status of our knowledge in each of the major subject areas, with a final chapter appraising present and future perspectives on the concept of stock assessment. All contributions are fully illustrated and referenced. Stock Assessment in Inland Fisheries is likely to become the international, standard reference for all fisheries departments--offering a single source of contemporary and definitive information. Moreover, it is also intended to serve as a course text for students learning about freshwater-fisheries management.

Book Description
The term "zooplankton" describes the community of floating, often microscopic, animals that inhabit aquatic environments. Being near the base of the food chain, they serve as food for larger animals, such as fish. The ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea) Zooplankton Methodology Manual provides comprehensive coverage of modern techniques in zooplankton ecology written by a group of international experts. Chapters include sampling, acoustic and optical methods, estimation of feeding, growth, reproduction and metabolism, and up-to-date treatment of population genetics and modeling. This book will be a key reference work for marine scientists throughout the world. - Sampling and experimental design - Collecting zooplankton - Techniques for assessing biomass and abundance - Protozooplankton enumeration and biomass estimation - New optical and acoustic techniques for estimating zooplankton biomass and abundance - Methods for measuring zooplankton feeding, growth, reproduction and metabolism - Population genetic analysis of zooplankton - Modelling zooplankton dynamics This unique and comprehensive reference work will be essential reading for marine and freshwater research scientists and graduates entering the field.

Book Description
By the year 2000, the world had built more than 45,000 large dams to irrigate crops, generate power, control floods in wet times and store water in dry times. Yet, in the last century, large dams also disrupted the ecology of half the world's rivers, displaced tens of millions of people from their homes and left nations burdened with debt. Their impacts have inevitably generated growing controversy and conflicts. Resolving their role in meeting water and energy needs is vital for the future and illustrates the complex development challenges that face our societies. The Report of the World Commission on Dams: - is the product of an unprecedented global public policy effort to bring governments, the private sector and civil society together in one process - provides the first comprehensive global and independent review of the performance and impacts of dams - presents a new framework for water and energy resources development - develops an agenda of seven strategic priorities with corresponding criteria and guidelines for future decision-making. Challenging our assumptions, the Commission sets before us the hard, rigorous and clear-eyed evidence of exactly why nations decide to build dams and how dams can affect human, plant and animal life, for better or for worse. Dams and Development: A New Framework for Decision-Making is vital reading on the future of dams as well as the changing development context where new voices, choices and options leave little room for a business-as-usual scenario.
