Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the Literature of the New Testament A book that is really old and really valuable has nothing to fear from the critic, whose labours can only put its worth in a clearer light, and establish its authority on a surer basis. In a word, it is the business of the critic to trace back the steps by which any ancient hoolt has been transmitted to us, to find where it came from and who wrote it, to examine the occasion of its composition, and search out every link that connects it with the history of the ancient world and with the personal life of its author. Book Description
Excerpt from An Introduction to the New Testament, Vol. 1 This holds true to a certain extent, though only partially, of modern works, because we ourselves, as contemporaries, are surrounded by the same relations, and must in some degree be acquainted with the circumstances and events of our day. Facts which we are ignorant of, and which it is desirable we should know, are generally stated by the author himself in his preface, and any further introduction is usually unneces sary. But the need for such an introduction arises soon after, indeed sometimes immediately after, the appearance of a work, especially if the events and circumstances of the time are closely connected with the subject treated of, or if the author has seen fit to conceal his own position and rela tionships. Much more is such an introduction requisite in the case of works written in places, circumstances, or times unknown to us or distant from us, as e.g. In the case of the Greek and Latin classics. Here it is usual to prefix a longer or shorter introduction before the more direct exposition of the text. And, in like manner, it is customary to prefix to the several books of Holy Scripture brief essays or state ments concerning their origin, their authorship, their design and contents, their genuineness and integrity, the works used in the exposition, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Critical Introduction to the New Testament Man has no deeper or wider interest than theology; none deeper, for however much he may change, he never loses his love of the many questions it covers; and none wider, for under whatever law he may live he never escapes from its spacious shade; nor does he ever find that it speaks to him in vain or uses a voice that fails to reach him. Once the present writer was talking with a friend who has equal fame as a statesman and a man of letters, and he said, "Every day I live, Politics, which are affairs of Man and Time, interest me less, while Theology, which is an affair of God and Eternity, interests me more." As with him, so with many, though the many feel that their interest is in theology and not in dogma. Dogma, they know, is but a series of resolutions framed by a council or parliament, which they do not respect any the more because the parliament was composed of ecclesiastically-minded persons; while the theology which so interests them is a discourse touching God, though the Being so named is the God man conceived as not only related to himself and his world but also as rising ever higher with the notions of the self and the world.
