Smoldering Combustion of Flexible Polyurethane Foams and Its Transition to Flaming Or Extinguishment
Author: Marcos German Ortiz Molina

Category : Combustion
Languages : en
Pages : 20
Book Description
An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the major factors governing the smoldering behavior of flexible polyurethane foams, and to provide some measure of the relative smoldering tendencies of different foams. The experimental results can in large part be interpreted in the context of a previously developed model for the smoldering mechanism of cellulose. Depending on the ambient oxygen concentrations and the configurations and sizes of foams, the smoldering can be steady and self-sustained or transient and following by flaming or extinguishment. The threshold oxygen concentrations at which transition to extinguishment occurs have been examined for three flexible polyurethane foams of different compositions. The relationship between the maximum temperature of the smoldering zone and its propagation speed in the steady, self-sustained regime and the effects of the involvement of cellulosic materials covering the foams on the steady and transient smoldering behavior have also been investigated. A criterion for ranking the relative smoldering tendencies of different flexible polyurethane foams has been identified. It is based upon the relative values of the threshold oxygen concentrations below which transition to extinguishment occurs.
