Book Description
Canton Atoll has a single passage between the ocean and lagoon and has conspicuous environmental gradients from that passage to the back lagoon. These gradients include the physiography of the lagoon floor, water quality, and the diversity and abundance of corals, fishes, and mollusks. The gradients can apparently be attributed either directly or indirectly to circulation and water motion within the lagoon. Those oceanographic characteristics can, in turn, be attributed to the geological history of the atoll, including some human modification of the pass configuration. In addition to the studies of the atoll lagoon characteristics of the groundwater system are noted. Evidence from isolated standing water bodies on the atoll demonstrates that these features show considerable variability, which may be attributed to a combination of the immediately previous history of these bodies as well as to the physiography of the atoll.

Pollution in Tropical Aquatic Systems
Author: Des W. Connell
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351092774
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 256
Book Description
We have identified a need to draw together knowledge of physiochemical and biological aspects of pollution in tropical aquatic systems. This book results from this and we hope will assist in providing management strategies to protect these systems from pollution effects. In organising the book we have, as far as possible, attempted to cover the range of topics important in understanding pollution in tropical areas. Authors who are expert in their particular fields have been invited to contribute. We recognise that many topics remain uncovered but we hope will serve to assist in identifying these and stimulate interest in this area.

Publisher: Academic Press
ISBN: 0128003324
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 447
Book Description
Advances in Marine Biology has been providing in-depth and up-to-date reviews on all aspects of marine biology since 1963--over 40 years of outstanding coverage! The series is well known for its excellent reviews and editing. Now edited by Michael Lesser (University of New Hampshire, USA) with an internationally renowned Editorial Board, the serial publishes in-depth and up-to-date content on many topics that will appeal to postgraduates and researchers in marine biology, fisheries science, ecology, zoology, and biological oceanography. Volumes cover all areas of marine science, both applied and basic, a wide range of topical areas from all areas of marine ecology, oceanography, fisheries management and molecular biology and the full range of geographic areas from polar seas to tropical coral reefs. This volume, with an introduction by Ray Hilborn, will present the latest views on the use of MPAs or Marine Managed Areas for fisheries management. It will contain a wide range of case studies including the Chagos archipelago, South Georgia, the Caribbean, the North Sea, Florida, Hawaii, Great Barrier Reef, California, Mediterraneanand the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. It is the intention of the editors that the volume presents a series of evidence based rather than advocacy driven contemporary reviews. AMB volumes solicit and publish review articles on the latest advances in marine biology Many of the authors of these review articles are the leading figures in their field of study and the material is widely used by managers, students and academic professionals in the marine sciences
