As a result of decades of accountability beginning with No Child Left Behind legislation, students’ academic achievement has become the primary focus of schools. As schools focused more on academics, opportunities for physical activity often decreased. The school setting offers the greatest potential to increase physical activity for more than 55 million students per year. Texas schools have continuously tried to find a balance between the pressures of academic achievement and the necessity of students’ physical activity. Policymakers need targeted research results in order to provide legislation that will both meet federal physical activity recommendations and increase academic performance in schools. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between performance on FITNESSGRAM Health-Related Fitness Standards (in two categories: Muscular Endurance and Strength) and campus-level average STAAR scores in 8th grade Reading and Math. Participants included stratified random samples of student populations from each of the 20 Educational Service Center Regions in Texas. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to determine the predictive validity of performance on HRFS to STAAR scores. A Pearson correlation was conducted and the results suggested a positive correlation between students’ performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) and academic achievement. A regression analysis was run to explore the relationship between students’ performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) and academic achievement (predictors) as measured by campus-level STAAR scores. The study revealed that performance on Health-Related Fitness Standards (HRFS) impacted campus-level academic achievement.

Physical inactivity is a key determinant of health across the lifespan. A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement. Subjects consisted of third- through eighth-grade students who were enrolled in the Floyd County School System located in Rome, Georgia, during the 2011-2012 school year. The data for this study were taken from the subjects' FITNESSGRAM scores, Criterion Referenced Competency Test scores, average daily attendance, and socio-economic status. The multiple regression analyses revealed modest correlations between body mass index and achievement in reading. The effects of fitness on academic achievement were positive but small. A higher level of physical fitness was associated with higher academic performance in school.

The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there were relationships between levels of fitness, body size based on Body Mass Index (BMI), and academic achievement in urban fourth-grade students. Subjects consisted of 877 ethnically diverse fourth-grade students enrolled in one of 14 elementary schools from two districts in a northeastern state. The researcher investigated state physical fitness assessments, body mass index, and standardized state mastery tests in mathematics and reading to analyze existing relationships. Fitness scores were analyzed through the use of raw scores as well as health-related fitness zones, while academic mastery test scores were divided into five categories, as well as raw scores. When fitness data were analyzed there appeared to be a strong relationship to academic achievement. The analyses of both mathematics and reading scores results showed that as the percentage of fitness tests passed increased, so did scores. More specifically, students who passed more than two-thirds of the tests scored significantly higher on both mathematics and reading. Most of the analyses used were analyses of variance (ANOVA) and subsequent post-hoc tests to examine differences in academic performance based on the percent of fitness tests passed. In addition, multiple regression analyses were used to examine the relative contribution of each fitness component to the mathematics and reading scores. Based on these results, one could conclude that the relationship between academic achievement and levels of physical fitness is of extreme importance. According to the results of this study, advocating the promotion of both physical activity and physical education programs as a way of increasing academic achievement in students is justified. As the pressure on public schools continues to rise to improve academic achievement and meet the demands placed on them by current legislation, all too often cuts are being made to physical education programs and time spent on improving the health, wellness, and fitness levels of our students. As students continue to become unfit and overweight, understanding the relationship that this has on academic achievement is critical.
