Book Description
Excerpt from Alloys and Their Industrial Applications During the last few years an enormous amount of research work has been carried out with the object of determining the nature and physical properties of alloys, and much valuable information has been accumulated. This information, which deals mainly with the simple alloys of two metals, is scattered throughout the numerous periodicals and publications in which the original communications have appeared, and up to the present no attempt has been made to collect the facts or to apply them to the more complex commercial alloys. Book Description
Excerpt from Aluminum and Its Alloys: Their Properties, Thermal Treatment and Industrial Application In this translation of Col. Grard's book on "Aluminium and its Alloys," the original text has been adhered to, with the exception of certain of the appendices. Certain of the conditions of the French aeronautical specifications, dealing with sampling and identification of material, have not been considered of sufficient interest to English readers to warrant their inclusion, but the clauses dealing with methods and results of tests have been given. The centigrade scale of temperatures has been retained throughout the book. In statistics of a general nature - as, for instance, in the case of approximate output - the tonne and ton have been regarded as equivalent. In exact statistics, however, an accurate conversion has been made, and both sets of values given. Where prices are given, the rate of exchange has been taken as twenty-five francs to the pound sterling, whatever the date of the statistics in question. The Tensile Strength and Elastic Limit are expressed in kilogrammes per square millimetre and in tons per square inch - at the express wish of the author, both sets of values are given throughout the book, in the tables and diagrams. In the case of Hardness and Cupping Tests, no conversion has been attempted, the metrical values being in general use in this country. As regards Shock Resistance also, no conversion has been attempted. On the Continent the term "Resilience" is employed to denote the energy absorbed in impact, expressed in kilogramme-metres per square centimetre of cross section of the test piece at the bottom of the notch, whilst in this country, it is employed to denote a different property. Book Description
Excerpt from The Metallic Alloys: A Practical Guide for the Manufacture of All Kinds of Alloys, Amalgams, and Soldiers, Used by Metal-Workers; Together With Their Chemical and Physical Properties and Their Application in the Arts and the Industries IT is not claimed that the work here presented actually fills a void in our technical literature, but it is believed that there is no other recent one in the English language on the Metallic Alloys which combines with practical use fulness a sufficiently popular character for those readers who have not made Metallurgy and its kindred Arts objects of special study. The endeavor has been made to offer a book which fully treats on all matters relating to the subject, and which will explain to the Mechanic and Artist the properties of the metallic alloys and amalgams as far as they find application in any branch of technology and the industries. Book Description
Metals and Alloys continues the series of graduate textbooks on Industrial Chemistry by Mark A. Benvenuto. It shows the essential industrial applications, processes and chemistry background for the extraction of metals, as well as the production and applications of alloys. The book discusses how large scale and minor processes affect every-day life, challenges in prevention and removal of waste by-products and illustrates selected chemical processes for which efforts have been made to improve and “green” industrial production of metals and alloys. Sources for metals are sorted by metal and alloy and backed by basic chemical background information and process set up. Overviews on worldwide ore distribution, refined metal and alloy production numbers are another focus of the book. Discusses sources, key processes and applications. Connects what students learn in class to real, large-scale metals chemistry that makes modern life possible. Intended for students, graduate students and beginners in the fiield of Chemistry, Chemical Process Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. Visit degruyter.com for more information on books by Mark A. Benvenuto: Industrial Chemistry (2013), Industrial Chemistry: For Advanced Students (2015) and Industrial Inorganic Chemistry (2015). About the Author: Mark Anthony Benvenuto A Fellow of the American Chemical Society, he received his PhD in inorganic chemistry from the University of Virginia. After a post-doctoral fellowship at the Pennsylvania State University, he joined the University of Detroit Mercy, where he is now the Department Chairman and teaches an industrial chemistry course.

Book Description
Excerpt from A Practical Guide for the Manufacture of Metallic Alloys Comprising Their Chemical and Physical Properties: With Their Preparation, Composition and Uses Hundreds of times have we held back from the undertaking of a special treatise on alloys. A complete work, adequate to the importance of the subject, would require innumerable researches and studies, and one volume would not be sufficient. Yet, it would scarcely be possible to give anything beyond a concise idea of a subject entirely too vast and complex to be treated in a strict and exact manner. Let us consider all the metals actually employed, from those which are essentially industrial, to the precious metals which belong to the arts rather than to industry proper; and up to those modern metals so little known that they still remain exclusively within the limits of scientific investigation. When we see these various metals combining with each other, one by one, two by two, three by three, c., and in various proportions, we may well ask if it be possible to create a methodical and absolute treatise on alloys. Book Description
Excerpt from Manufacture and Uses of Alloy Steels The Object Of this monograph is to give briefly information of present value relating to the manufacture and uses Of the various commercial alloy steels, with the hope of stimulating the demand for such steels and extending their practical use. Alloy steels are included in the so-called special steels, but as the latter term is Often used in the mills to designate broadly any steels intended for purposes other than those served by the regular product, it has seemed best to use the more specific term Of alloy steels in this monograph. Alloy steels are bringing about a series Of revolutions in various industrial fields in which steel plays an important part. Most elements that could be procured in sufficient quantity have been alloyed with iron in various proportions, either alone or in combination with others, in the search for useful alloy steels. Those steels that have gained and maintained for themselves a place in current use are discussed in this monograph. Some Of them have had an ephemeral life Of usefulness which would no doubt have been prolonged had not some other more satisfactory steel been developed.
