Book Description
Since the founding of Algonquin Provincial Park in 1893, Ontario has developed a parks system that is held in the highest regard. Today, some 260 parks span the province. Protected Places is a comprehensive account of the attitudes and actions that have shaped provincial parks policy over the century – notably those of early conservationists and more recently of environmentalists, aboriginal peoples, vacationers of every description, naturalists, scientists, loggers, miners, concession operators, the administrators with the responsibility to plan, develop, and manage the parks, and the politicians who made the ultimate decisions on policy matters. Author Gerald Killan’s analysis cuts across the disciplines of history, geography, political science, environmental studies, and the earth and life sciences. The book will be of compelling interest to readers from all thsese backgrounds, as well as the park visitor. Protected Places is being published in 1993 as part of the celebration of the Centennial of Ontario’s provincial parks.

To ensure that the Algonquin Provincial Park Master Plan remains current, it is reviewed about every five years to evaluate progress made and to provide an opportunity for public consultation. This document discusses the issues raised before the Provincial Parks Council in the second of those reviews, summarizes public comments on those issues, and presents the Council's recommendations. Issues covered include park lands, marketing initiatives, trails, recreational uses, fishing, visitor services, cottage leaseholds, timber harvesting, camping facilities, enforcement of regulations, facility maintenance and funding, concessions, and capital development projects.

Book Description
Swan Lake Forest Research Reserve was established in 1950 to study the ecology & silviculture of commercially important hardwood species of south central Ontario. It covers 3,480 hectares in the south-west corner of Algonquin Provincial Park. This management plan supersedes the previous (1983) planning document for the Reserve and details plans for management of the Reserve for the next 20 years. The introduction explains the value, benefits, & objectives of the Reserve. This is followed by a description of the Reserve site, a history of the Reserve, and review of research & extension programs both current & planned. Part 6 describes Reserve infrastructure (roads, buildings) and planned activities related to maintenance & upgrading. Part 7 contains guidelines to facilitate communication between the Reserve and Park management. Finally, excerpts are presented from two important documents that regulate activities in the Reserve: the Algonquin Provincial Park Management Plan and the Class Environmental Assessment for Provincial Parks & Conservation Reserves.
