African American Women's Literature in Spain
Author: Sandra Llopart Babot
Publisher: Universitat de València
ISBN: 8411181693
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 732
Book Description
This volume brings forward a descriptive approach to the translation and reception of African American women’s literature in Spain. Drawing from a multidisciplinary theoretical and methodological framework, it traces the translation history of literature produced by African American women, seeking to uncover changing strategies in translation policies as well as shifts in interests in the target context, and it examines the topicality of this cohort of authors as frames of reference for Spanish critics and reviewers. Likewise, the reception of the source literature in the Spanish context is described by reconstructing the values that underlie judgements in different reception sources. Finally, this book addresses the specific problem of the translation of Black English into Spanish. More precisely, it pays attention to the ideological and the ethical implications of translation choices and the effect of the latter on the reception of literary texts.

Narrativizing Theories
Author: Benjamin John Peters
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1532694911
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 180
Book Description
Ours is an age of offense, a time of reactionary shock--always received, never given. Ours is an age that has forgone cultural narratives, a time of individualism--wherein personal identities trump the collective spirit. Ours is an age of failing earth, a time of ecological collapse--yet the consumption of global capitalism continues to run amok. But don't fear. You have the correct worldview, the best solutions. It's not your fault these things are happening. It's the president's, the immigrant's, and the Islamicist's. Or perhaps It's the socialist's, the tree hugger's, and the baby killer's. But it's not your fault. Never yours. For the world exists as you see it--in an echo chamber lined with golden pixels. Do I still have your attention? Then join me. Within the covers of Narrativizing Theories, I dive into ambiguity and aesthetics to depict how clashing worldviews exist side by side yet remain mutually incompatible. I examine how cultures distinguish between acceptable and unacceptable beliefs, embodiments, and identities. And I outline an aesthetic theory of ambiguity that highlights--through the twists and turns of literature--the provisionality of knowledge and the narrativization of reality.

Christopher Marlowe at 450
Author: Sara Munson Deats
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1317166485
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 382
Book Description
There has never been a retrospective on Christopher Marlowe as comprehensive, complete and up-to-date in appraising the Marlovian landscape. Each chapter has been written by an eminent, international Marlovian scholar to determine what has been covered, what has not, and what scholarship and criticism will or might focus on next. The volume considers all of Marlowe’s dramas and his poetry, including his translations, as well as the following special topics: Critical Approaches to Marlowe; Marlowe’s Works in Performance; Marlowe and Theatre History; Electronic Resources for Marlovian Research; and Marlowe’s Biography. Included in the discussions are the native, continental, and classical influences on Marlowe and the ways in which Marlowe has interacted with other contemporary writers, including his influence on those who came after him. The volume has appeal not only to students and scholars of Marlowe but to anyone interested in Renaissance drama and poetry. Moreover, the significance for readers lies in the contributors’ approaches as well as in their content. Interest in the biography of Christopher Marlowe and in his works has bourgeoned since the turn of the century. It therefore seems especially appropriate at this time to present a comprehensive assessment of past and present traditional and innovative lines of inquiry and to look forward to future developments.

Facing Poetry
Author: Frauke Berndt
Publisher: Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
ISBN: 311062348X
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 429
Book Description
Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714–1762) is known in intellectual history for having established the discourse of philosophical aesthetics with his "Meditationes philosophicae de nonnullis ad poema pertinentibus" (Reflections on Poetry) and "Aesthetica" (Aesthetics), which consists of two books and is considered Baumgarten’s most important work. But this book amends that history. It shows that Baumgarten's aesthetics is a science of literature that demonstrates the value of literature to philosophy. Baumgarten did not intend to pursue such a task, but in working on his philosophical texts and lectures, he ends up analyzing, synthesizing, and contextualizing literature. He thereby treats it not as belles lettres or as a moral institution but rather as an epistemic object. His aesthetics is thus the first modern literary theory, and his articulation of this theory would never again be matched in its complexity and systematicity. Baumgarten’s theory of literature has never been discovered. It waits latently to take its place in intellectual history.

Graphies and Grafts
Author: Eva Darias-Beautell
Publisher: P.I.E-Peter Lang S.A., Editions Scientifiques Internationales
ISBN:
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 284
Book Description
This study provides a close reading and a critical analysis of four novels by contemporary Canadian women writing in English: Joy Kogawa's Obasan (1983), Sky Lee's Disappearing Moon Cafe (1990), Kristjana Gunnars's The Prowler (1989), and Aritha van Herk's No Fixed Address (1987). The analysis draws on a combination of post-structuralist, post-colonial and feminist working concepts and perspectives. It is predicated on the assumption of the fundamental interconnectedness of all aspects of human knowledge, and partakes of the process of intertextuality affecting our own contemporary experience of the world. Recent fiction by women, but also feminist and postcolonial theories of meaning and textuality, have had an important share in changing our views of the world/text from a closed structure to a constant process of cultural/textual interaction between two or more cultures/texts. The novels examined here provide rich sites for the exploration of these changing paradigms and their exegesis will offer alternative ways of dealing with language, history, gender, fiction, text and reality in Canada and elsewhere.
