Book Description
Excerpt from Treatise on Diseases of the Nervous System, Vol. 1: Comprising Convulsive and Maniacal Affections The work I now lay before the public principally owes its existence to my having held, during the last ten years, the appointment of physician to a hospital, where a great proportion of the cases brought under my observation have belonged to that class of diseases which are the subject of this treatise. Here a variety of phaenomena have presented themselves, from time to time, to my notice, which have appeared to throw light on some pathological inquiry, or to suggest some practical indication. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diseases of the Nervous SystemThe object-lens should have a focal distance of about two inches, and it should be held so as to bring the focus on the pupil. The lamp is placed behind and a little to one side of the eye to be examined. In order to see the optic disk, the patient is told to look at the ear of the observer on the side opposite to the eye being examined. In this way the axis of vision is directed inward, and the optic disk readily brought into view. These examinations are made in a room lighted only by the lamp used in the processes. It is sometimes necessary to dilate the pupil with atropia, in order to obtain a view of the disk, but experience and tact will generally enable the observer to dispense with this rather dio agreeable procedure.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from A Treatise on Diseases of the Nervous System In the presentation of the individual diseases, their diagnosis and pathology have been especially dwelt upon, the writer being of the firm opinion that treatment and general therapeutics are absolutely valueless - sometimes positively dangerous - in the absence of a cor rect or approximately correct diagnosis. Neurology's hardest prob lems are in the diagnostic sphere. Given a correct diagnosis, the treat ment is generally a very simple affair. Diagnosis and pathology rest upon anatomy and physiology, hence much space has been given to normal as well as abnormal neurology m the following work. Book Description
Excerpt from A Manual of Diseases of the Nervous System, Vol. 1: Diseases of the Nerves and Spinal Cord Such a classification helps us to obtain clearer views of the primary relations of disease, but is not convenient for systematic description. For this a hybrid system is necessary, in which organic and structural diseases are classified according to their scat, - in the nerves, spinal cord, or brain. With each group may be placed some nutritional or functional maladies of local incidence. The bulk of these diseases are, however, best considered separately, after the organic diseases have been described, since many of them are of wide distribution or uncertain seat.
