Excerpt from A Treatise on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Diseases of the Chest, Vol. 1 On his death, and in compliance with his request, Dr. Hudson, the valued friend of many years, undertook to prepare, as an historical landmark in medicine, a reprint with additions which Dr. Stokes had himself prepared and put in Dr. Hudson's hands. Dr. Hudson made me promise that if he edited the book, I would write a brief memoir of our common friend as a prefix to the work. Death has now removed Dr. Hudson also, and what I write cannot, alas! Be revised by him. Had I foreseen this, ' I probably should not have undertaken the difficult duty. As it is, the few pages that follow are poor offerings placed on the grave of a beloved teacher, at the dying request of his comrade, Who fell while erecting a monument to his friend. For the love of both would that my offering were more worthy. I pray the members of the New Sydenham Society to accept the tribute, such as it is, not for the deed but for the will.
