The election of Ronald Reagan in 1980 was said to herald a new mood of opposition to government regulation. But at the same time, large and vocal segments of the population have been demanding that corporations and regulatory agencies address public concerns about technological safety. What do we really know about people's perceptions of technological risk and their judgments about appropriate levels of technological regulation? Perceptions of Technological Risks and Benefits analyzes the results of a unique body of survey data—the only large-scale, representative survey of public attitudes about risk management in such technologies as nuclear power, handguns, auto travel, and industrial chemicals. The findings demonstrate that public judgments are not simply anti-technological or irrational, but rather the product of a complex set of factors that includes an awareness of benefits as well as a sensitivity to the "qualitative" aspects of risk (how catastrophic, dreaded, or poorly understood a hazard seems to be). This volume offers striking evidence that whatever Americans may think about government regulation in general, they are remarkably consistent in desiring stricter regulation of technological safety. These conclusions suggest that the current trend away from regulation of technology reflects a less than perfect reading of public sentiment.

Attitudes towards science and technology has been drawing the attention of many researchers focusing their search on specific aspects of public understanding of science, measuring risk perception associated with the development and wider dissemination of new technologies, engagement in decision making about controversial research issues. While some authors prefer to focus on the prevalence of particular attitudes towards S&T, trying to explain the differences between countries by variances in their economic development, others search for specific individual factors underpinning their development like values or beliefs. In our paper, we attempt to bring together these perspectives and comprehensively analyze both individual and national factors that define public opinion on S&T by considering the example of the attitude that characterizes optimistic or pessimistic perception. The method of multilevel regression analysis is used for this purpose. It was shown that inclusion into the model both micro and macro-level indicators is helpful to explain the differences between countries and allow us to better understand the “pure effects” of certain social determinants of public attitudes towards science and technology.

"Although the modern world is one of technology, technology is still minimally integrated and frequently used at lower levels in many schools. Despite the recent focus on the 21st-century skills of communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking, technology use in classrooms seems to have stalled. Through this mixed methods case study, the researcher sought to explore the impact that teachers' perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs have on classroom technology integration practices. It is anticipated that by gaining a better understanding of this complex relationship, there may be a greater appreciation for why more teachers are not using computer technology in ways advocated in the literature. Moreover, this may enable educators to facilitate a better alignment between research, practice, and beliefs in order to provide more effective ways of supporting and documenting teacher change. Results from this study showed that there is a strong positive relationship between computer efficacy, teacher efficacy, and the integration of classroom technology. Results also showed there is evidence that student-centered classroom approaches positively influence how what, and when teachers decide to integrate technology into their classrooms and curriculum. Rogers’s (1995) Theory of the Diffusion of Innovations suggests that there is a positive relationship among students’ attitudes, perceptions, and expectations toward instructional technology in relation to the diffusion of innovations. Furthermore, the evidence shows that there is a very high correlation between acceptance of diffusion and students’ attitudes, acceptance of diffusion and students’ perceptions, and acceptance of diffusion and students’ expectations toward instructional technology.
