Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of the Slocums, Slocumbs and Slocombs of America: Genealogical and Biographical; Embracing Eleven Generations of the First-Named Family From 1637 to 1881: With Their Alliances and the Descendants in the Female Lines So Far as Ascertained; Also the Etymology of Those Surnames, an Account of Some Researche The research and the eftorts to make this a full and trust worthy genealogical history have probably been as thorough as in most undertakings of the kind; and it is believed that no considerable number of families have borne the surname Slocum, Slocumb, or Slocomb, in America who are not herein represented. Completeness, however, may be considered an impossibility in a work of this character, covering so many years and with so many scattered families and lost records, and, withal, where so many who could aid in the work are disinclined to do 50. Where the records or reports have been fragmentary or indefinite marks of doubt are inserted, particularly if any inference is expressed. Wherever present time is intimated the reader may understand that the year 1880 is the time referred to. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
This is the biography of a ruling-class woman who created a new identity for herself in Gilded Age and Progressive Era America. A wife who derived her social standing from her robber-baron husband, Olivia Sage managed to fashion an image of benevolence that made possible her public career. In her husband's shadow for 37 years, she took on the Victorian mantle of active, reforming womanhood. When Russell Sage died in 1906, he left her a vast fortune. An advocate for the rights of women and the responsibilities of wealth, for moral reform and material betterment, she took the money and put it to her own uses. Spending replaced volunteer work; suffrage bazaars and fundraising fÃates gave way to large donations to favorite causes. As a widow, Olivia Sage moved in public with authority. She used her wealth to fund a wide spectrum of progressive reforms that had a lasting impact on American life, including her most significant philanthropy, the Russell Sage Foundation.
