This latter procedure is likely to lead to more accurate results than the former, since we include more of the interaction in our unperturbed problem. Excerpt from The Application of the Impulse Approximation to the Inelastic Scattering of Electrons by Hydrogen Atoms A comparison of the experimental results with the theoretical results shows that the Born approximation tends to overestimate by a considerable amount the value of the cross section at low energies. In general, the maximum of the calculated cross section occurs at a value of the energy less than the value at which the actual experimental maximum occurs. Even the second Born approximation gives a value which is still too large for the cross section, although it is closer.
