An Archival Journey through the Qatar Peninsula
Author: Sue-Ann Harding
Publisher: Springer Nature
ISBN: 3031038452
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 361
Book Description
This book retrieves from the archives people, places and perspectives normally overlooked to tell an original and expansive history of the Qatar Peninsula, paying close attention to landscape and the natural world. The arc of the book moves geographically through the landscape and chronologically through selected sources, drawing on digitised maps, manuscripts, hydrographic surveys, government records, traveller accounts, early photographs, archaeological and ethnographic reports. While these are standard sources recruited by Qatar to tell its own singular, streamlined history, this book is a subversive reading of those sources. It braids together elusive and precarious stories – difficult to find, at risk of being lost, and never before brought together into a single volume – to write a more complicated story of place. Through them, we can reimagine a place that, like many in the world, works hard to control a limited set of stories about itself. Readers who know something about Qatar will be surprised by the book’s nuances and details. Readers who know little or nothing will be drawn in to discover that, even in the most out-of-the-way and inhospitable places, deserts are never empty.

The Hajj
Author: F. E. Peters
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691225141
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 451
Book Description
Among the duties God imposes upon every Muslim capable of doing so is a pilgrimage to the holy places in and around Mecca in Arabia. Not only is it a religious ritual filled with blessings for the millions who make the journey annually, but it is also a social, political, and commercial experience that for centuries has set in motion a flood of travelers across the world's continents. Whatever its outcome--spiritual enrichment, cultural exchange, financial gain or ruin--the road to Mecca has long been an exhilarating human adventure. By collecting the firsthand accounts of these travelers and shaping their experiences into a richly detailed narrative, F. E. Peters here provides an unparalleled literary history of the central ritual of Islam from its remote pre-Islamic origins to the end of the Hashimite Kingdom of the Hijaz in 1926.

British Travel-writing on Oman
Author: Hilal Said Al-Hajri
Publisher: Peter Lang
ISBN: 9783039105359
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 324
Book Description
This book focuses on the images of Oman in British travel writing from 1800 to 1970. In texts that vary from travel accounts to sailors' memoirs, complete travelogues, autobiographies, and letters, it looks at British representations of Oman as a place, people, and culture. The study discusses the current Orientalist debate suggesting alternatives to the dilemma of Orientalism. It also outlines the historical Omani-British relations, and examines the travel accounts written by several British merchants and sailors who stopped in Muscat and other Omani coastal cities in the nineteenth century. Another focus is with the works of travellers who penetrated the Interior of Oman such as James Wellsted and Samuel Miles, and the travellers who explored the southern Oman and the Empty Quarter. Finally the book looks at the last generation of British travellers who were in Oman from 1950 to 1970 employed either by oil companies or the Sultan Said bin Taimur. The gap of knowledge that this book undertakes to fill is that most of the texts under discussion have not been studied in any context.
