Book Description
This dissertation is a research project looking for a path of discovery and healing for Second Generation Cult Survivors (SGAs) who suffer the debilitating symptoms of complex trauma and or complex PTSD. This study is heuristic in nature because of my role as a participant-observer in the research process. I use my own life and healing process as an accurate measure of authenticity by comparing it to the healing experiences of other SGAs (Moustakas, 1990). It is a qualitative inquiry, using a phenomenological approach, as I use the information I have been gathering for the last 4 years from the lived experiences of SGAs and the methods they have found helpful in their recovery processes (Creswell, 1998). In addition, I have conducted an online survey of SGAs, asking them directly what has helped them heal. This study examines how destructive cults cultivate complex trauma in the children living within the confines of their walls. It then looks at treatment modalities for helping this population recover. This dissertation applies a depth psychology perspective to add new levels of trauma treatment that address the needs of second generation cult survivors. In order to develop a way to help SGAs, first you have to find out where they are, where they want to go, and what kind of help they want and are willing to accept. It does no good to build a bridge to an island that no one wants to leave; for the cult survivor, this truth is elemental.

Book Description
For decades the author did not realize the symptoms of PTSD and ADHD she was experiencing were due to the childhood trauma she was subjected to while a member of the Church of Scientology's Sea Organization. At the age of 17, as one of the first residents of the "Big Blue" (the landmark building in Los Angeles), she not only witnessed the largest FBI raid in history, she was also a member of the infamous 1977 PAC RPF (Rehabilitation Project Force) where she pulled 18-hour shifts performing heavy labor to renovate the new headquarters. What followed were years of sleepless nights as a member of the United States Guardian's Office while the Church battled the government to keep L. Ron Hubbard's wife, Mary Sue Hubbard, out of jail for her role in illegal government break-ins known as Operation Snow White. Sandra left in the 80's only to find herself haunted by the ghosts of the Church for decades. She found solidarity through her work with refugees from Cambodia and Africa and healing through her work as a photographer. She has bonded with her fellow cohorts known as the Children of Scientology, breaking the stigma of isolation so many second-generation cult survivors have struggled with. Her memoir shines the way for the children of the world who have experienced similar trauma (through genocide and war), by advancing the conversation on Adverse Childhood Experiences and how this universal crisis affects over 34 million people in the U.S. alone, transcending all racial boundaries. Her journey spans over five decades and 30 countries culminating in a truth-to-power indictment against Scientology, one of the most powerful cults in existence today, known for their celebrity followers and their well-documented attacks against their victims and critics to keep the truth from coming out. Never once has the Church taken any responsibility for their actions.

Book Description
A personal but also scholarly journey into the clandestine and confusing world of ritual abuse, this book provides unique insights into the catastrophic experiences of ritual abuse survivors and their efforts to find healing through psychological treatment. This revised edition provides contemporary revelations about cults in existence today and also new therapies developed since the first edition was published in 1995. Co-authored by a clinical psychologist and the executive director of a professional organization dedicated to treating survivors of cult and ritual abuse, this edition will be of interest to both academic and professional markets. The special legal dilemmas, survival problems and day-to-day life experiences of these survivors are examined in a scholarly but sensitive manner. The book presents the idea that ritual abuse is an age-old phenomenon found in many cultures throughout the world. That ritual abuse causes a variety of specific psychiatric symptoms is noted. Special attention is given to the diagnosis dissociative identity disorder that is frequently found among ritual abuse survivors. Suggestions are offered for effectively dealing with the various social and legal problems that result from this severe form of abuse. New diagnoses--cult and ritual trauma disorder--are proposed for this newly identified problem.

Book Description
A searing memoir of reckoning and healing by acclaimed journalist Stephanie Foo, investigating the little-understood science behind complex PTSD and how it has shaped her life “Achingly exquisite . . . providing real hope for those who long to heal.”—Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, NPR, Mashable, She Reads, Publishers Weekly By age thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: She had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD—a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years. Both of Foo’s parents abandoned her when she was a teenager, after years of physical and verbal abuse and neglect. She thought she’d moved on, but her new diagnosis illuminated the way her past continued to threaten her health, relationships, and career. She found limited resources to help her, so Foo set out to heal herself, and to map her experiences onto the scarce literature about C-PTSD. In this deeply personal and thoroughly researched account, Foo interviews scientists and psychologists and tries a variety of innovative therapies. She returns to her hometown of San Jose, California, to investigate the effects of immigrant trauma on the community, and she uncovers family secrets in the country of her birth, Malaysia, to learn how trauma can be inherited through generations. Ultimately, she discovers that you don’t move on from trauma—but you can learn to move with it. Powerful, enlightening, and hopeful, What My Bones Know is a brave narrative that reckons with the hold of the past over the present, the mind over the body—and examines one woman’s ability to reclaim agency from her trauma.

How do we co-create safer yoga and spiritual communities? Through dogged investigative work, careful listening to survivor stories of assault and abuse, and close analysis of the cultic mechanisms at play in the sphere of Pattabhi Jois’s Ashtanga community, Matthew Remski’s Practice and All Is Coming offers a sober view into a collective and intergenerational trauma. It also offers a clear pathway forward into enhanced critical thinking, student empowerment, self-and-other care, and community resilience. Concluding with practical tools for a world rocked by abuse revelations, Practice and All Is Coming opens a window on the possibility of healing— and even re-enchantment. While Mathew Remski is the courageous, insightful, and compassionate author of this informative, challenging, and thought-provoking book, this book is clearly a group effort. Book Description
In the world of recovery, there has been a shift from using the word victim to survivor when describing those who have been abused. This new label conveys strength to empower and to embolden you as you begin the journey of recovery. While moving from victim to survivor is an important step in the healing process, it does not go far enough in framing an identity that leads to letting go of the pain of abuse and finally feeling normal. In Beyond Surviving, author Rachel Grant, a sexual abuse recovery coach, provides an understanding of the three stages of recovery victim, survivor, and beyond surviving and offers survivors guidance and tools for reaching the third stage of recovery. Based on cognitive behavioral techniques, neurological science, the power of language to heal, and Grant's personal journey, Beyond Surviving teaches you how to actively challenge and break the patterns of thought and behavior that result from sexual abuse. It explores how different areas of life are impacted by abuse and communicates valuable skills for gaining a new perspective that inspires action and change. It provides an opportunity to reflect and practice these new skills through exercises and assignments. Beyond Surviving enables survivors of sexual abuse to take back their rights and realize their own ability to make powerful choices about who they are and how they live.
