Book Description
Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter to the Clergy and Laity of His Diocese Creed, the article on the descent into hell, which the Reviewers Of the Prayer Book had left out and further, till a solemn assurance was given to the Archbishop of Canterbury, that, in omitting the Atha nasian Creed, and in the other omissions in our Liturgy, no essential departure was designed from the doctrine, discipline, and worship Of the English Church. Hence, the Athanasian creed is virtually as binding upon the American Church as 'i1pon the English; so that any member of that Church who should deny the truth 'of that creed, or any article of it, would, thereby, become a heretic. On this same principle, viz}: that the judgment of the One Catholic and Apostolic Church, in regard to faith, and order, and sacraments, is the ultimate Standard for all Christians, it _is, that whatever, in the way of doctrine, is set forth by any national Church for the protection or illustration of truth, must be held subservient to such judgment, and be understood in consistency with it.* There is no middle way between this and the merest private judgment, or the doing that which is right in one's own eyes, a thing directly forbidden by Almighty God. From this, it must be manifest to all, that a dio cese does not determine its own faith, but comes nu der the necessity, by becoming a diocese, to believe and do certain things already determined for it by Almighty God, _as authoritatively set forth by the Universal Church, and conveyed to it by the national Church, and that it has no power to alter, to modify. Is not the duty of seeing to it entirely committed to the clergy? I would revive in your recollections the law of the Church, printed in every Prayer Book, just before the Psalms in Metre, where it is written thus: It shall be the duty of every minister, with such assistance as he can obtain from persons skilled in music, to give order concerning the tunes to be sung at any time in his Church; and especially it shall be his duty to sup press all light and unseemly music. Book Description
Excerpt from Pastoral Letter Addressed to the Clergy and Laity of the Diocese of Saint John in the Right Reverend T. Casey, D. D., Bishop of St. John The evils of our times are great and manifold. To these times the words of the Psalmist may be applied with special emphasis, truths are decayed from among the children of men. - P.r. XXL, 2. With the disappearance of truths, faith has weakened, charity gone cold, and spiritual life flickers feebly in Society. It behooves us to recall the words of the Master in making us this gift of His infinite love as an unfailing means of support My flesh for the life of the world. -jo/m VI., 52. Indeed, to comprehend with a firm faith the excellence of the Holy Eucharist is to kn 'lw fully that work which, by the power of His love, god-made-man accomplished for the human race. The same faith that teaches us that He was born, lived, worked, suffered. And died for our salvation, assures us that He abides in this Holy Sacrament to communicate to us the inexhaustible treasures of the Redemption which He effected. Book Description
Excerpt from A Pastoral Letter Addressed to the Clergy and Laity of His Province It remained for me to consider how far the state ments of Dr. Williams, respecting Holy Writ, were reconcileable with those express declarations of the Church in her formularies and articles. His esti mate of the Bible is, That it is an expression of devout reason, and therefore to be read with reason in freedom; he finds in it a record of the Spi ritual Giants whose experience generated the Reli gions Atmosphere we breathe and speaking of the Eternal Spirit, he says, If such a Spirit did not dwell in the Church, the Bible would not be in spired for the Bible is before all things the written word of the Congregation. Bold as such a theory of inspiration may sound, he adds, it was the earliest creed of the Church and it is the only one to which the facts of Scripture answer.
