Book Description
Excerpt from A Narrative of Italian Travels in Persia, in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries The close of the fifteenth century is an epoch in the history of the East, and especially of Persia, of which but little is known. The blast Of' Timour's invasion had swept over that historic land and left it deso late. These four Accounts of Travels by Europeans are, therefore, especially interesting in a geographi cal and historical point of view, and will, with the books of Barbaro and Contarini, which are in Ramusio's collection, complete the series of Italian voyages about that period. In order clearly to un derstand the facts brought forward, it will be neces sary to glance at the motives of policy which started the embassies, and the historical changes which in fluenced their results. Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation
Author: Robin Healey
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 1442658479
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 1185
Book Description
Italian Literature before 1900 in English Translation provides the most complete record possible of texts from the early periods that have been translated into English, and published between 1929 and 2008. It lists works from all genres and subjects, and includes translations wherever they have appeared across the globe. In this annotated bibliography, Robin Healey covers over 5,200 distinct editions of pre-1900 Italian writings. Most entries are accompanied by useful notes providing information on authors, works, translators, and how the translations were received. Among the works by over 1,500 authors represented in this volume are hundreds of editions by Italy's most translated authors – Dante Alighieri, Machiavelli, and Boccaccio – and other hundreds which represent the author's only English translation. A significant number of entries describe works originally published in Latin. Together with Healey's Twentieth-Century Italian Literature in English Translation, this volume makes comprehensive information on translations accessible for schools, libraries, and those interested in comparative literature.

Theodore Spandounes: On the Origins of the Ottoman Emperors
Author: Theodōros Spandouginos
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521585101
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 200
Book Description
Theodore Spandounes belonged to a Byzantine refugee family who had settled in Venice after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. He wrote an account of the origins of the Turkish rulers and of their phenomenal rise to power. It was partly a plea to the Popes and princes of western Christendom to unite against the infidel and one of the earliest works of its kind. The first version of the book, written in Italian, appeared in 1509 and was translated into French in 1519. The final version was made in 1538 and a full Italian text was published in 1890 though without any historical commentary. This book presents an English translation of the full text with a preface, commentary and notes; a discussion of the sources which Spandounes might have consulted and an assessment of the value and interest of this hitherto neglected and undervalued treatise.

Extremist Shiites
Author: Matti Moosa
Publisher: Syracuse University Press
ISBN: 9780815624110
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 614
Book Description
Little is known in the West about the division of the Islamic world into Shiites and Sunnites and even less about the stratification of these two groups, with most of the attention going to the Sunnites. Moosa's comprehensive study of the origins and cultural aspects of the different extremist, or Ghulat, Shiite sects in the Middle East is a ground-breaking work. These sects whose 'extremism' is essentially religious are generally a peaceful people and, except for the Nusayris of Syria, are not political activists.
