Book Description
Excerpt from A Narrative of a Visit to the Australian Colonies Some Black and Wandering Albatrosses were continually soaring around us; and a ock of the beautiful Petrels, called Cape Pigeons, kept close to our stern, generally on the wing, but often swimming, or running on the water after anything cast from the ship. The wind howls, and the sea rages in vain to these birds. They keep on the wing in the fiercest tempests, and swim with ease on the most boisterous waves. It was a trying time for all on board, especially for the poor women and children; into whose quarters the water several times found its way in torrents. The perplexities that some times arose, occasioned some of the soldiers to quarrel and swear, even when the vessel seemed ready to be overwhelmed so inveterate was this evil habit! It was a season of trial both of our faith and patience; but the belief that we were in our right places was sustaining. Book Description
Excerpt from Narrative of the Visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to the Colony of Victoria, Australia Such being the case, the compiler was led to the conclusion that an event which had evoked more enthusiasm in the breasts of Australians, of all ages and conditions, than any other occurrence in the history of these colonies, was worthy of being put into the form of a permanent record. Many of the details given in the following pages may be pronounced as tri ing, uninteresting, or of no importance to the public at large: such doubtless is perfectly true of much that is narrated herein, but the compiler risks the loss of patience by the general reader, rather than do injustice to the loyalty of those whose means, or distant situation from the scenes of the Royal festivities, prevented their taking a prominent part in the public rejoicings.
